[REQUEST] Cartoon Models

I don't want this to get into a OMG U WANT TF2 MODELS?! thread, because that's not what I want.

Here's a screeny:

Anyone working on anything like this or even know if it's possible?

DarkieJ 12-28-2007 07:09 PM

that screenie looks like tf2:P Haha:) ontopic, Looks nice i would have that too. I dont think anyone is on it

Its something Ive started working on. (starting w/ the RPG). Its a very labor intensive project tho.. so don't expect it any time soon. I have to give priority on reworking some stuff for FF 2.0, so my side projects will get done as I have time.

Those are from TFC aren't they, and it's just cell shading.

If I knew how to decompile/recompile source models correctly I could get this done pretty quick. Tutorial anyone?:)

pF 12-29-2007 08:39 AM

Modelling as opposed to reskinning is a lot more work.. and depending on how different the new model is from the original, it also includes rigging, weightmapping, animating and so on.

I've got a couple of ideas for new player models too, but bleh still doing medkit weightmaps. And i wanted to design a new IC after that.. it shouldn't look exactly like the RPG.

EDIT: Jester, grab Studiocompiler , it includes the MDL decompiler. Then you can check out the SMD's with either XSI's Modtool (which i use), or Milkshape or 3D Studio Max, whichever has SMD import tools.

The models would look cool probably, but once you stuck them in the maps they'd look foolish and misplaced.

It happened in TFC too, but that didn't make less cool ;D. The only "problem" was that sometimes you would see them completely black in long-range.

GhostBuster 12-29-2007 05:10 PM

I think people used this ones cos they made models much more easier to spott, just as the crappy toilet-looking walls.

One question... my gfx card cant render cel-shading.Can I play with these models, when they'll be ready to download?

KubeDawg 12-30-2007 12:20 AM

You could try downloading the TFC cell shaded models and install them temporarily and test that to see if it works.

Jester 12-30-2007 02:50 AM

They are not technically cel-shaded(in any HL mod). The model is just enlarged and inversed so it appears as an outline while it is actually just a bubble around the model. So it's more of a question if your card can handle twice the polies for each of whatever model you want.

pF 12-30-2007 12:37 PM

That's not an actual screenshot though, is it?

Mad_Clog 12-30-2007 05:41 PM

it's a screenshot made in tfc

How exactly can a graphics card NOT render a model? I could understand poly count being to high or something along those lines, but not being able to render cel-shading? That's retarded.

Adamido 12-30-2007 06:26 PM

^
lol yeah.My bad.

If the shader used DirectX 9 commands but you had an old dx8 card, it would not be able to render the shader. In HL2 it would have to use a fallback shader.

Beh, I hate tampering with models, just leave FF as it is.

I know that, but the TFC cartoon models are basically just two models. One main model and a second "shell". Oh, and just so you know, cel-shading isn't a shader.
