Steam Universe is expanding in 2014

"Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.
Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam."

anyone who has ever used big picture more than once please raise your arms

I've accidently misclicked it at least a dozen times. Does that count?

Downloadable soon. Free forever!

SteamOS will be available soon as a free download for users and as a freely licensable operating system for manufacturers. Stay tuned in the coming days for more information.

I was just about to post that update.

Here is a decent write up (although a bit too glowing for Valve):

WOOO STEAMBOXES ARENT ACTUALLY MADE BY VALVE WAIT WHO THE FUCK WILL MAKE THEM THEN

http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamMachines

UH

who will make them?

anyone?

no?

panasonic maybe

like the 3do?

nintendo, sony and mircosoft wont make them.

who the fuck else makes vidya game consoles?

uh

guess we'll find out in 2014

time for everyone to do the 'THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST' then.

'currently 34,719 eligible beta candidates' in about 5 hours

well, no chance of that happening now.
currently 0.8% chance.

after amurica time it'll be 100,000+. then we get 0.2% chance. in a day.

then there's only 29 more days of people doing it.

whelp. bye.

KubeDawg 09-25-2013 08:00 PM

They've already talked to 25 or so HW manufacturers, probably mostly PC manufacturers I would guess. A console is just an overpriced PC in a special looking box.

Interesting track pads. Maybe aiming won't suck as much as it does compared to current pads.

Time to die PS and Xbox?

SteamOS

SteamOS's Public BETA went live around 13 hours ago.

Unfortunately: "WARNING: Both installation methods will erase all content on the target computer."

So, I guess I can't just go install this right now.

BETA is BETA, folks.

What are the SteamOS Hardware Requirements?

Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor
Memory: 4GB or more RAM
Hard Drive: 500GB or larger disk
Video Card: NVIDIA graphics card
(AMD and Intel graphics support coming soon!)
Additional: UEFI boot support
USB port for installation

Better than average specs required currently... (and it's not like it can be your main PC, 'cause it's turned into a SteamBox)

In the SteamOS Beta standard configuration, the Steam Client program serves as a user interface and provides connectivity to our Steam online services. That being said, you can still access standard Linux desktop.
And strange that it isn't fully enclosed, but tbh, it is BETA, and I wouldn't expect it to be.

ddm999 01-08-2014 05:38 PM

And Valve just revealed the manufactures of the initial Steam boxes.

The makers of first generation Steam Machines are:
  • Alienware
  • Alternate
  • CyberPowerPC
  • Digital Storm
  • Falcon NW
  • GigaByte
  • iBuyPower
  • Maingear
  • Materiel.net
  • Next Spa
  • Origin PC
  • Scan
  • Webhallen
  • Zotac

"systems starting as low as $499" = £305 GBP = €367 EUR = ¥52310 JPY (dammit japan)

Based on the minimum specs for SteamOS currently, that seems quite low.

I'm buying a Steam Box when they come out, because I could do with a gaming device that runs my Steam Library that is moderately portable and easy to setup.

I can't carry my PC everywhere, but I can take a Steam Box, plug it in to a TV, and play the games I play on PC with my Cloud saves there, and just do what I would do on a PC, except at a friend's house.

When they realise they can get one, and it's better than their Xbox or PS (for which 10 games is as expensive as the console itself - and it's fully backwards compatible if they replace it with a newer one later on in life - not to mention compatible with a PC), they'll get one.

Then I can play multiplayer games with my PC friends vs. my console friends on a TV in another house, even another country or my monitor. Hell, I can go anywhere with an internet connection in the WORLD, because Steam Boxes don't have any country limits like other consoles do.

GeoKill-----> 01-08-2014 09:36 PM

Yup, more than likely I will be getting one myself.
