Microphone Recommendation.

I need one. Bad.

What do you guys recommend?

I prefer it to be cheap.

I love this thing: Logitech 980186-0403 Silver USB Connector USB Desktop Microphone

Nice, it looks like it'll be successful.

I'll consider this.

Go with what the other guys suggested and get a headset+mic, standalone mics suck. They always make people sound like they're standing 15 feet back and catch all the ambient sounds.

I'll take it.

Dont buy logitech headsets.

Long ago, I had a logitech headset. I will call this headset 1. I play tfc rather regularly and I never had a problem with it.

A kind friend gave me another headset that was a bit nicer. I will call this headset 2. Again, both headsets work fine for tfc.

One day I decide to try out tf2. No one could hear me in game. I messed around with my audio properties, I messed around with the mic... no help whatsoever. Headset 1 refused to work in tf2. I would flip over to tfc, and it worked but the moment I flipped back over to tf2 it didnt work. I figured I had a setting somewhere goofy, but I couldnt pinpoint it.

Headset 2 DID work on both tho so I tossed out headset 1 which was the logitech.

A year later... headset 2 starts to crackle and cut out and I need a new headset. I forgot about my problems a year ago, so I go out and buy another logitech.. headset 3. I play tfc and everyone can hear me.

My kid fires up tf2 and starts complaining that people cant hear him. I dig headset 2 out of the garbage and plug it in, (I didnt even close out of the game... I just unplugged one and plugged the other in) BINGO! people could hear him. (It was crackling like there was a short, but they could hear him). I tossed out headset 2 again, I returned headset 3 and purchased a different brand and now am playing both tfc and tf2 with headset 4! lol.

Moral of the story, sometimes it is just easier to return one product and purchase a different brand.

Although I've never played TF2 my logitech headset seems to work fine for FF. I apparently come through clear enough that people pick up my Canadian accent pretty quick.

I'm on my 2nd logitech of the same model though, but the first one broke because I stepped on it and busted it up pretty good. Not because it just decided to stop working.

My Logitech works fine in TF2. The only issues I have is that if I plug in other USB devices, steam changes my defaul Mic to something else :-P

Everything 04-28-2009 07:24 PM

I'll go with the logitech one Mooga posted, because I can't really afford anything higher than $30.

Mooga 04-28-2009 11:59 PM

I picked it up for $25 locally. I was worried about a USB mic, but it's DAMN LOUD and amazing.

Only complaint: It has a Green LED. I would have liked a Blue LED to match my case.

be a man and mod it yourself.

You know what, I never really considered it. I might look around and see if it's been done by someone else before I crack the case and start digging.

you're seriously complaining about the colour of an LED? i thought you were joking at first..

Kidneythief 04-30-2009 09:08 PM

I have these.

Very good sound quality and pretty comfortable. They cancel almost 100% of any ambient sound in the room your in...so much that I cant hear my wife screaming at me from the same room.

I'm half joking. The point is that they are so good, that is my only complaint.

mervaka 05-01-2009 11:49 AM

okay, that honestly slipped past me :)

I just buy the cheapest staples brand one when its on sale for like 5 bucks. Its done me just fine. Its got, inline volume control for the stereo headphones, and adjustable mic. Really short cables so I picked up some line extensions.

I hear everything just fine and if they break I'm out 5 bucks instead of 50 or more bucks on a more expensive set. I've had this headset for 3 years now I think and I used them for a couple of hours each day with no problems. The only thing I could want in them is an inline mute too.

Mooga 05-01-2009 08:43 PM

Another nice thing about that mic, is that the base is SOLID. It's not too heavy, but it's not going anywhere unless you move it.
