Small attacking trick on ff_aardvark.

I haven't seen anyone else bar me do this, and Obtuse Rubber Goose spectated me and said he's never seen anyone do it... so I'm going to share it with fellow attackers as a great way to get past defense at the top of the aardvark ramp, as it can be painful when it is heavily defended, I use it often to get past soldiers, get security, evade SG's and other defenses.

I do it as scout but I think other classes can accomplish it.

In basic: Trimp at the very top of the ramp up to the second floor.

Video I've just recorded and uploaded to youtube that shows me doing it twice so you get the idea. It's just a small trick to help people out, you can see from the video that it's a good move to have in your arsenal.

For anyone interested, I record a demo or multiple demos in game, close FF, then open Fraps, open FF, play the demo(s) one by one and record using Fraps at 40 FPS, half the size, (fraps saves the video as quite a large file size), so I then open the video(s) in Windows Live Movie Maker (WLMM), do any editing like combining multiple videos together or adding text/screens. Then I sign into Live (through WLMM), and upload the video directly from WLMM to YouTube at 720p resolution which allows for an HD option on my video for better quality. And WLMM manages to save and upload the finished video at a considerably reduced file size than what Fraps saved it as while keeping all of the quality. (one video went from 500mb Fraps size to 32mb WLMM size) And then without even opening YouTube in my browser, my video is already uploaded with a full description, tags etc... Windows Live Movie Maker saves a lot of time... and really takes care of a huge chunk.

I love that trick. Doesn't always work the way I want, but I can usually maneuver over to the lower platform near security if I miss the upper platform.

Cool stuff, never seen that or thought to try it.

Yeah, sadly I didn't just go on FF and record that demo straight away, I recorded about 5 before I finally did it two times in a row, then I replayed it and recorded with Fraps.

In the heat of combat though, I usually pull it off at the right times and it is so good at getting past all sorts of defenses at the top of the ramp, most of the time an SG can't even lock on in time.

EDIT: If people want it, I will also record myself on DropDown dropping from the top and concing back up with the flag, and also concing from the bottom up, which doesn't need security.

Pretty neat trick although people have been doing that for a while now (don't mean to steal your thunder!). It works pretty well until a hwguy starts standing in your way at the top of the ramp

Another cool trick on aardvark is concing from the battlements and touching the flag rooms window.

yeah. You have shown me the right line for it now though. I've tried it n done it a few times before but my sucess rate isn't great :p

Well, since I was doing it in my own server and had no defense to get past, I was using an almost straight line, which gives more success so I could record the video, but when there is a Soldier at the top looking to splash me on my way up the ramp (which is often the case) I need to weave left to right at speed then trimp it at the right point which is much harder. Using that line in combat is predictable sadly.

I imagined people will have been doing it for a while, aardvark has been around for years, but from all my time playing this year which has been the time I have honed my scout skills and improved, I discovered it on my own and never seen anyone else do it, even the scouting pub greats like Panda and Talcum never used it (atleast while I was watching), so I figured it was somewhat uncommon, and since Defense has recently got a huge boost, I thought I'd share a neat little trick with all of the scouts out there. Hopefully I'll see more people using it to get one over on the defense :P

I want to teach more people the tricks on DropDown too, I learned them from Panda, and PikE learned them from me and most others either don't know about them, or don't know the right technique.

I usually conc myself and somehow end up near the button.

Another trick to get out of the base, although it takes a bit longer is to take the flag to the water route. If you jump correctly, you can make it down the elevator shaft that normally pushes you upward. This can be done with any class including heavy.

leet stuff didnt knew that one : D

Iggy 07-04-2011 10:08 PM

I figured that one out quite a while back. It's not easy to do, though... but can be done.

L33t stuff.

I use this all the time, can be done as scout easily, and a medic if you hit it right.

As a scout I find it best to bhop into the boost pad with as much speed as you can 600ish, strafe towards the right wall and jump just short of the top of the ramp. Best bet is conc from battlements, shark water so you don't lose health by fall damage, slide out of water with one jump to the pad and bhop so you hit the ramp midjump. You can also juke D by applying a curve to your rampslide.

brb, shadowing me in spec, learned it from me. Credit please.

Afraid not, but like KubeDawg and hlstriker said, people have been doing it for a while, I just found out on my own because I used to trimp at the top of the ramp to go over the top of defenders so they couldn't splash damage me, then one time I looped around the corner and realised I could get onto the second floor, which is now my technique for getting security and going around that corner so there's less chance of running into a defender.

Hammock 07-06-2011 09:10 PM

Ya I figured that one out only a couple days after FF's release , as Aardvark was played constantly back then, I do it all the time. Jay's right it can be done as a medic as well.

The easiest way to do it (now I mean absolute easiest way), is from a jump pad on your battlements HH conc to the front of enemy base, touch the ground for one step before hitting the boost pad.

The trick is to touch the ground for only 1 step before hitting the boost pad don't land directly on the boost pad, and don't take more steps before.

You take minor fall damage, and again like Jay said the best route to take is sharking through the water, but like I said, what I described above is the absolute easiest way to do it (provided you just freshly respawned and are concing to the enemy base)
