Bridget is the only person I've seen so far who actually "gets it".

FF is pretty damn good, but it needs shit like training done. It needs to be accessible.

Getting people is a fucking cakewalk and a half. All the promotion I've done and other people have done has probably gone to shit because getting people is worth absolutely nothing when we're not keeping them.

Look at the forum member list. We have 5,000 members, and only 300 of them are active. We don't need to spam forums or any of that shit, because people are going to be drawn to the game anyway. It's on Steam, it's free, it's polished. It's just keeping them here. If we had kept all the players who have gave FF a try but left because it didn't appeal to them or wasn't accessible, we would have a very large fanbase.

I don't doubt that this has been and is a problem, but this was not what I wanted to discuss here. Rather it is a thing that should be discussed at the beta-section, and with devs, and not just before a release of a patch that's mainly attacking that particular problem...

I am thinking since 2.4 is coming out and these areas are largely improved with that, we should all make an effort and have people try it out; I'm sure will stick around this time.

If you look at any free game, you'll see that most people who try it don't stick around. I guess that's an advantage of something actually costing money, you make that little extra effort to actually enjoy it.

One thing you have to realize is that by promoting a game that most people don't enjoy, you run a heavy risk to lose those people as potential players. Forever.

Forgive me for being skeptical, but 2.1 was supposed to be the savior of FF. And IF 2.4 is the messiah of this beautiful game, then we don't need to "promote" the game at all since we already get a decent influx of players.

there's nothing we can do to promote the game other than word of mouth. the devs have been working hard (and by working hard I mean turning tricks) trying to promote the game but it's just not that easy getting a game of this size out there.

2.4 isn't the messiah. It's one set of improvements in a long line of improvements to follow.

2.4 is on the go, and once out I think it's a great opportunity to try to increase the playerbase.
This is what i've said from the go. What's so problematic with this? Either 2.4 has improved the ability to hold players, in which case it's a good idea to try and get more people to check it out (this is what I believe, but I am of course quite partial), or 2.4 hasn't improved the ability to hold players, in which it doesn't matter whether or not we try to get more players. You see where this is going?

On that note, has anyone compared influx vs dropouts of FF players to any other third party mod or other game for that matter? Since everyone here seems to know that the problem lies not in number of new players but how fast they leave, I assume this is not something that can be found in other more sucessful games (in terms of active leagues etc.). They're not more sucessful due to getting out to more people who try it, but that they hold on to a higher percentage of those that do. Correct?

I'd like to be able to redeem my fortress points for porn. It would take years to save enough points for an FF basketball hoop so... porn will suffice.

I'd love Steamworks support, and stat tracking.
Would love to be able to see "Total Fortress Points"

I agree with Mikael_hs, its more important to hold all those whenffwillout players that show everyday, rather then promoting it, for that imo just maintain, the stuff that they expected from the game, i hear a lot of those players asking what happened to the teleports, but Devs keep uber rejecting this, with their clanstye gaming experience, another thing that i think could help maintaining new players is the fortress forever stats that gibz mentioned.

Anyone who has any clue in marketing will know that just because something is good doesn't mean it will sell or be used. This game needs to be advertised, smack that ryu video in every forum... put it as youtube video responses. If people just keep ignoring this and saying "wait for the game to be good" then FF will be a massive flop. The game has been "good" for a while, Infact it's pretty damn good right now.

Make a movie section on this site that generates some ad revenue and use that money for getting advertisements on gaming websites/magazines.

What class are the new peeps gonna play..? Thats my question...I see them playing medic getting in the way thinking their playin TF2 everyday, Only class I see them playing and having any fun with for a short while anyway would be Pyro, HW gets tranged then owned very quickly, Engie is a joke for any newcomer after he gets sabbed twice then his build blows up in his face, or he sees a humiliating message that says "dude you been haxored" wtf???
I personally feel the whole sabotage thing is a big mistake and drives off newcomers and should be a rarity only for the most sneaky and skilled spies, in TFC I would kill a skilled spy 8 out 10 times in a 1 on 1 as HW, I really dont think that can be done in FF after your tranged, your screwed.
Basically, make the NG fun again and youll keep newcomers around long enough to venture out into new areas of skill, Im just hoping someone has enough wisdom to see what damage you have done by nerfing the NG class to the weakened state it is now, and simply fixing it.

Being tranqed does not mean you are screwed, it takes a bit more skill then simply shoot at the spy who is trying to shank ya ass. I've owned spies who have tranqed me many times.

poster idea

i have an idea for promotion that i think could improve player base. i was at an eb games shop the other day picking up the new madden. i was talking to one of the guys that works there and asked him if i could post some posters ( ff in mind of course). now i took graphic design for three years and if some devs could send me some in game photos or photos of the character each by them selves i could create a good lookin protional poster. and then who ever wanted to could dl the file and do the same as i. all i want to know if i can get permission from the creaters to do this and if i caould get some whicked ass photos.

what do u guys think??????

Moving this to its own thread, because I present the truth.

sounds like a great, and I don't see why not. Talk to Ihmhi about it, he's the press guy and can help with all that afaik.

Ostrich_Eggs 09-04-2009 03:08 PM

Does anyone have a link to the source sdk terms of use? I'm curious to see what the limits are. And hold your horses sticky, I'm not so sure that's within the terms of use.

Mikael_hs 09-04-2009 03:08 PM

yeah great idea tripleS!X. These where the types of initiatives I was looking for with starting this topic. Very good.

I'm thinking I might make a similar "advertisement avi" as that old tfc video, which compared cs public to tfc public (think it was called tfc forever?); only this time comparing slowmo tf2 with ff. Good idea? If so I would need some1 to tell me what about tf2 one can exploit, and contrast as unfavourable compared to FF... I've only played it once.

What is the most boring part of tf2 public gameplay?
