Project Suitcasepc

Yeah, decided to go nuts and convert this:

http://www.dopclan.com/Screenshots/koffer.png

into a pc.

I measured everything and it's fit to hold a 15" screen and I think I'll go for a mini-pc MoBo

insde w/o lid: approx. 7,2 x 32,5 x 26,5 cm
lid: approx. 3,5 cm in height
41,5 cm diameter

If you're used to work in inches: http://www.manuelsweb.com/in_cm.htm

The inside coating is removed.

But I need help, tips, suggestions, etc. on how to fit everything else in there.

So shoot

if you coul provide dimensions, we could help more :D

h x w x d

You ask, we type:

insde w/o lid: approx. 7,2 x 32,5 x 26,5 cm
lid: approx. 3,5 cm in height
41,5 cm diameter

If you're used to work in inches: http://www.manuelsweb.com/in_cm.htm

Oh yeah forgot to mention: The inside coating is removed.

the only big problems i can foresee are:
cpu cooling..your going to need a low profile cooler, and some good fans. i assume that case is mostly wood, so it wont disipate heat as well as something metal.
video card: because of the low profile of the case, you will probably have to use an agp card with a right angle riser board..but this will also cover your other pci slots..but a standard height card wouldnt fit anyway, so probably onboard audio.
power supply..i would go with a server ps something low profile like a 1U, and make sure its spec'd for atx.
this is a basic setup..it will probably vary depending on the size of your components.

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too, the case is indeed wood.
I would need AT LEAST 4 fans and I'm thinking about cutting out the bottom edge and placing a grid there to provide extra cooling. Another option is solving it like my tower does: a pipe going from the CPU fan to the outside of the case.

I always use onboard audio so that's no issue, as for video card position, that IS a big issue, and I'd like to use PCI(-e) if possible, but I doubt it.

I was thinking along the lines of getting an old laptop (My old internship was a computer shop so I can get old pc's pretty easy) and using the feed on that. Question is: Is it atx compatible and will it be enough to supply eveything with enough power?

Oh and to save place I'll be using a laptop HDD.

Thanks for helping so far, I have a day off on Thursday so I'll be able to go to my old friends and ask some more info/pricing :)

I'm really looking forward to this, it'll be my first project and I want it to be a good one! :)

*edit* Well lookie here!

http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquir...ge-camera-case

I'm not to keen about his screen set up and mine will include a keyboard/mousepad combination INSIDE the case.

And he solved the problme of too little cooling: make an airstream with 3 fans (2 in, 1 out) so that's covered too!

Zatoichi 03-31-2008 04:26 PM

yeah not bad..id def stick with the atx ps route..jsut take it apart and be damn careful what you touch lol. i think his case may be a tad bigger than yours, but that seems like a pretty good reference. are you going totally stealth like his, or is your I/O panel going to pertrude out like a standard case? looks like ALOT of measuring is in your future lolz!

Oh god! I know shit about taking shit apart! This will be one hell of a challange! I hope I don't get zapped!

Yeh it is a tad smaller than the case I found, but I've learned a lot from those pictures, and his explanations.

And I HOPE to go stealth, but I'm afraid I'll have to sacrifice some 'stealthness' in order to fit everything in.

And the power source, that's the biggest pain, I want this thing to be a fully operational pc with everything inside. Like a laptop.

Sorry for douple proast but:

Ded already?

No one here knows stuff about stuff?

No one wants to give advice, tips, flames, laugh at me for trying, ...

???

Damascus 04-02-2008 07:51 PM

My advice?

Cut a whole lotta holes for cooling .

After you're done, make a video of all the people staring at you when you use the "SuitcasePC".

Then upload it onto Youtube and laugh at the noobies trying to emulate you.

I would suggest the following.

Fans
Cut holes for the fans, but hold onto the material you cut out. Make little flaps/doors that can be opened and closed. You can get tiny hinges and screws from a hardware store.

Foam
Aside from (obviously) screwing everything down, you should line the bottom, top, and sides with a thin layer of foam and then coat that with a non-conductive material. You will be reducing a small fraction of your space, but it will help protect the case against bumps and the like.

Security
Install a handcuff onto the thing so you can cuff it onto your wrists.

Screen
Make sure there is some kind of buffer that seperates the screen from the internal parts - like a wood panel in front of the screen that can be removed and put behind it. The last thing you need is something accidentally kicking the case and having the HD smack into the LCD and crack it.

Storage
Try and cram space for a keyboard and mouse in here... it can be done if you are careful with your space.

Style
I'm sure someone could get you an extremely high res shot of the red team's logo. Get it, and spraypaint it onto the side. That would own.

Circuitous 04-03-2008 01:54 AM

I once hob-knobbed a PC together out of spare parts and used a shoe box as the case.

Worked fine. Dunno why this would be daunting.

CHANGE OF PLANS

Went to my pals at General Repair Center todat and we brainstormed a little.
Truns out that:

The suitcase was too small, it could bareley fit a µATX MoBo
The suicase is made of Cider wood, which EATS warmth, so I could never have enough cooling.

Luckily, they had a solution in stock:
An aluminium DJ CD-case: 424 x 265 x 173 mm

Closed
Open
Lid detached
A whole lot more room!
Old vs new
Mucho difference

And I also have a shopping list:
  • MoBo: GA-G31M-S2L (µATX)
  • µATX PSU 350 Watt
  • Push-in DVD-ROM
  • 2xDDR2 2Gig
  • 2x Laptop HDD 250Gig (in RIAD 0)
  • Coolermaster musketeer
  • USB bluetooth adapter
  • 9600GT 512mB
  • 4 8cm Casefans (with blue leds)
  • Mini keyboard targus/trust
  • 15" tft/lcd monitor

More info soon!

Yeah I got some pricing info and gonna go buy me some plating but I've been very busy at work so that's all for the moment.

Still struggling to find a decent 14" screen or 15" widescreen, if anyone has anything, perferably inside the EU, post it here please!

I did however found a decent keyboard that should fit, thank you Cherry! :D

Be prepared to post pictures of the finished product. This sounds pretty badass :-)

OH I'm taking a shitload of pictures, don't you worry!

Ok I found an old Philips CRT multimedia stand which holds 2 small woofers, plugged them in and turned them on: HOLY SHIT, they could hear the music two stories up!

So I'm taking the whole thing apart for those two woofers! :)

KubeDawg 05-06-2008 02:02 PM

Wow, I am liking this idea! Good luck in your lengthy journey!

פֿяαιп βαмαgεפ 05-06-2008 04:27 PM

Thanks man, I think I found a solution for my screen too: http://store.earthlcd.com/LCD-Products

And BINGO: http://store.earthlcd.com/SK-1005-SK...7&category=190 Pci slot :D
