Utilities, Share yours

A place to share and discover nifty utilities. Can be anything so long as it's purpose is useful.

The few things I'm using and now consider essential are:

RBTray* or Trayit!
Folder Marker (free)* or iColorFolder
Tinyspell
Unlocker

And the more common:
Rainelender (thanks Drain Bamaged)
Rocketdock with Stacks Docklet

I am after a alternative to windows clipboard. Haven't had a proper look yet because as with everything there are so many around and many variations. Any recommendations?

Edit:
From now on please post like this so post are easy to see and don't get buried:

Unlocker
"Unlocker is an explorer extension that allows you with a simple right-click of the mouse on a file or folder to get rid of error message such as error deleting file or folder, cannot delete folder"

You, sir, are welcome.

Apps I use:

Objectdock, kinda like Rocketdock but different.

Hott notes 4: this is a BILSS when you have a habit of forgetting stuff, and I have one!

And I'm experimenting with Aston Shell, I'm trying to convert the entire desktop to look like the DODnetSystems menu in Crysis.

That's about it, iColorFolder looks nice, might use it.

Google Desktop w/ analog clock, scratch pad, Gmail, weather, 6 shortcuts and a recycle bin.

Suits me.

Looks like you need a recovery cd a LOT.

Check out Hiren's Boot cd, that's a good one too.

Acid Reflux 09-10-2008 11:28 AM

If it contains all that is listed, I'm impressed! I'm downloading the rar now.

Yeah it's very usefull if friends call you alot with questions like 'hey, my screen turns blue and I can't do anything, can you come check it out?' :p

But seriously, it's about the only cd you'll ever need to un-fuck a fucked up system.

Acid Reflux 09-10-2008 11:46 AM

Lots O' goodies! Thanks!

Gwarsbane 09-10-2008 03:24 PM

I'm surprised no one's mentioned SIW. Great tool for telling you a bunch of things about a system...including product keys....password....etc

TweakUI is a MUST for any windows system. The only GUI modification I use (if you can call it that) is Yahoo Widgets with simple CPU, RAM, and Bandwidth gauges. I have a few other widgets, but nothing I use often.

I've considered messing with some GUI mods, but most of them are either useless, clutter, or crazy window hacks that can cause stability issues.

Good stuff guys.

The Wonderful Icon

About The Wonderful Icon:
The Wonderful Icon 2.2 is a small Windows utility that resides in your PC's taskbar tray. Try it and you'll be hooked!
TWI has lots of wonderful features. With it, you can:
  • Assign hotkeys for common tasks such as minimize windows, restart Windows, etc.
  • Minimize programs onto the taskbar tray instead of just onto the taskbar, either by a keystroke or by right-clicking a window's Minimize button with your mouse
  • Configure a menu of easily-accessible commands
  • Increase or decrease speaker volume with the press of a button
  • Automatically run programs at start-up, and hide them, minimize them to the taskbar tray, etc.
  • Lots more!
  • Oh yeah, and it's free!

I have been using rocketdock, but that stack docklet is very nice... Any suggestions on where to get some better winxp themes (I forget the name of the specific .dll) and nice wallpapers?

Crazycarl 09-14-2008 04:57 AM

SequoiaView
Shows the contents of your drive as boxes relative to the files's size. Extremely useful if you need to make space but you don't know what to delete.

That looked baffling at very first glance. Gave it an install, damn PG2 is using 7gb atm. Would never have thought. This is indeed extremely useful.

TeraCopy - Copy your files faster and easier

Great thread. :)

Mulchman MM 09-16-2008 06:31 AM

I second AnyDVD; it's a must for dvd ripping. I used to use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter but have switched to CloneDVD2 for all ripping & burning needs as it hasn't ever crashed on me like the other 2 apps.

i'd like to add: Miranda IM (combines AIM / ICQ / Jabber / MSN / Yahoo / GaduGadu / IRC), Skype, Entunnel, Foobar 2000, WinSCP, PuTTY, and TightVNC (but only used over SSH tunnels)

Paft 09-16-2008 06:37 AM

I'd use Pidgin or M-IM, much cleaner and lighter than that bloatetd WLM. Only con is they don't support webcams. I'd be using one of them otherwise.

Mulchman MM 09-16-2008 06:45 AM

I don't know how anyone can stand pidgin; it still looks like shitty GTK gfx!

Paft 09-16-2008 06:53 AM

:)
It has 2 pros over MIM that i've seen.

1) You are ready to go after install. MIM is like a delish sandwich. But you are only given the bread, you have to fill it yourself.

2) Because of gay WLMs popularity lots of people use the Plus addon with pointless coloured names. In MIM you just see a code. Pidgin you don't. edit: not entirely true!

But MIM default is super light!

Second monitor cut off because it's blank at the moment

PSPad because notepad isn't enough, and Notepad++ doesn't play well with some programs/is bad. For notepad replacements i've literally tried them all, and this is the best one (and it's free)

Console2 because I always need a command prompt at my fingers, and it gives me an interesting looking wallpaper

xplorer² The least ghetto explorer replacement, so many things that explorer should have, without some of the annoyances. Again, the least ghetto file manager i've found.

Foobar2000 even though you can't tell from the screenshot, I can easily sort and customize multiple playlists quickly and easily through a searchable database.

Sandboxie is a sandbox for your computer, lets you analyze a virus, or just protect yourself from one if you suspect a file might be infected.

If you want to know, the config I tested and using is called cheeta 1.4.
Just tried slightly editing this to try and familiarize myself with things and get it working with Foobar instead. Since I like this config enough to use it.

Pretty cool:

Here is some of my favorites :

BBClean- Explorer windows shell replacement, makes windows like Black box/ Fluxbox in linux....Lets me have a volume control in my context menu's and lots of cool looking desktop widgets to choose from.
http://www.lostinthebox.com/viewtopic.php?t=2286

there are a bunch more Black box windows mods out there, I know of 8... you can find out more about them here:
http://www.bb4win.org/news.php

they make your desktop look like this:
http://browse.deviantart.com/customi...hemes/fluxbox/

They style files are cross platform, and compatible with blackbox, or fluxbox in linux.

SOme of the cool features:

Windows "shade" and roll up

Windows have an "always on top" feature, so other windows do not cover it... great for calculator, or notpad.

Multiple desktops, somewhat like TweakUI's virtual desktops but much faster

thousands of styles to choose from.

Loads from login almost instantly... no waiting for services to start.

Lots of plugins, so you can make your desktop as minimal, or as comlpex as you want...

anyways, have fun! the linux style of windows manager, is really much more advanced than windows or mac OSX. It definately is much more productive for me :)
