I'm in the reference collection phase of my character concepts. I would like to open this thread up to any references the team might collect. Images speak louder than words to me. I'm collecting images that might inspire class physique, armor, clothing, etc. Naturally, I can't include everything, as I don't want these characters to be a collage of different ideas.
I personally want these character's bodies to be proportional to bodies that actually exist. For example, for the soldier I want his body type to be similar to Dwayne "the rock" Johnson. For the heavy, I was thinking "The Mountain" from Game of Thrones. The scout will be influenced by a track and field body type. I see these classes as athletes at the peak of their condition.
For clothing and body armor, I'm looking to gather reference from soldiers and swat teams. Their armor should reflect their class abilities. The scout needs to have very little armor so that he can be as agile as possible. The heavy, on the other hand, knows that he is going to be a slow target and should be prepared with the most armor. There's a whole range of armor between those classes. I want the armor to be inspired by what's out there, but with a new spin on it. Like if we were designing armor now with all of the knowledge and technology that we have to build armor for these future soldiers. In short, the armor should feel familiar but on the cutting edge of technology.
I have to design these characters to be consistent and use my knowledge of what works with video game characters. I have to keep in mind polycount, what kind of skeleton they will need, if we can share skeletons, how they will animate, and other constraints.
Feel free to post images, links to other references, or your comments. I will look through everything, and filter through the references to create these concepts. The silhouettes that I created are merely the start to get ideas going. As I move forward with the concepts, some will change a little, and some will change a lot. Here's your chance to influence the visual design of these characters. Thanks.
