I am in need to setup a NAS for home use. It will be hosting my media and backups images. I prefer the cheaper route utilizing a large disk I already have and adding another for redundancy. It must support 1000 Base-T. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Galaxy 3500MGB-RAID Pro Network

The Galaxy unit is diskless. I currently have a 500GB drive with data on it. If I were to buy another of this drive and place them both in the Galaxy NAS would I it be possible to create a mirror array while retaining the data on the first drive?

BUFFALO LS-W1.0TGL/R1 1TB LinkStation Pro Duo NAS
This unit comes with the drives. Does anyone have experience with this unit?

are you looking for this to be for streaming media? or just backup?

I've read some very good things about the Drobo ( www.drobo.com ), but it's USB/Firewire (but could be shared over the network).

Thanks for the suggestion.
I am looking for a large volume that will be hosted and it will be for accessing media as well as backups and images etc. The Drobo looks nice but is pricey and I would need to buy the additional upgrade to put it on the network.

Have you checked out the Qnap NAS devices?

We use this brand/model in our company, it works quite well for what we need. Although I don't think it has raid ability, and it's max capacity HD is 500gigs.

This one has more HD capacity, but still no raid.

This one has even more HD capacity, and has RAID. But can cost up to $350

Hi-cap NAS is relatively inexpensive. Hi-cap with RAID is much more pricey.

Freenas is nice but I don't have an extra PC. I think I will look into this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822344001

It fits my budget. :-(

Reviews on Newegg seem mixed on that one.
