hl2 crashing

Recently experiencing problems with source games, (hl2 and fortress forever), it was working fine last night, however all day today when launching ff steam pops up with "Preparing to launch fortress forever" and then shortly thereafter a windows alert pops up informing me that hl2.exe has crashed.

I've attempted several things:
Reinstalling hl2/fortress forever
updating video card drivers to the latest version
deleting both .blob files in the steam folder - when I do this and restart steam the first attempt pops up an error claiming the registry is already in use for steam.exe
restarting steam/pc multiple times

any help with this issue would be helpful

edit- Fault Module Name: shaderapidx9.dll is the error im getting and ive tried the suggesting repairs on steams website all to no avail
