Source SDK Base

Does everyone have to download this? Does this come with HL2.

I installed HL and HL2 a while ago, I didnt play on Steam for about half a year I come back and for some reason my mods are all gone as well as HL and HL2, I cant find my HL2 cd.

Now Im downloading Source SDK Base and Im dling very slowly, are there any other options like other places to dl?

You can only download it through steam and it's needed because the game launches through it. Source SDK base is an application mods can use so they are always running the newest version of the source engine.
