For anyone having CTD on startup

The problem I was having had to do with a refresh rate force utility I was using. (Reforce). As soon as I had it set all modes to default everything was good. Not entirely sure why it was not affecting my other games, but TF2 had the same problem.
Hopefully this saves someone time and trouble.

To force refresh rates in HL2 steam games, try putting -refresh xx in your launch options.
