NEOTOKYO°: Source
One of only 3 mods for HL2 that I've cared for. FF, NT:S, BMS.
[ Release Information ] Name: NEOTOKYO°: Source Release: Sometime on July 3rd (EST), estimated 3pm-5pm EST. Site: http://www.neotokyohq.com Trailer: http://www.monkeyjunkie.co.uk/NT/ [ Downloads ] Torrent: http://bit.ly/2TgEti Direct DLs: http://www.moddb.com/mods/neotokyo/n...tokyo-released DO NOT download from ww3gaming.com, it is NOT supported by the NT Devs and it is believed to be a virus. Requirements: - Source SDK Base NT:S Package - 10 maps ...all capture the ghost gametype. - Recommended max 24 player slots. (9v9 to 12v12 are best as far as gameplay and flow). 32 players is fun but a bit spammy. - Total size of the installer is about 900megs and unzipped is 2gigs. - In order to run NEOTOKYO, you need to have any game that gives you the source sdk base installed. [ About NEOTOKYO°: Source ] NEOTOKYO is a first person shooter that provides a visceral & realistic combat experience in a rich futuristic setting. It is greatly influenced by our admiration for Masamune Shirow (GHOST IN THE SHELL) and Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA), and has been in production since October 2004 Story: NEOTOKYO takes place about 30-40 years from now in a Japan that has drifted into social/political strife due to the inevitable stresses that come from changing times. The Japanese government is grappling with intensified external (Asia geopolitics) and internal (economic/social) problems, and there is mounting pressure from within Japan to return to the days when it exerted influence through military power and strength. A failed legislative push to alter the Japanese Constitution (allowing the Japanese military to engage in offensive actions outside of the country) leads to an attempted military coup by members of Japan's armed forces (GSDF). The coup fails, but was very close to succeeding. In an effort to suppress further coup attempts, Japan's Prime Minister forms a branch inside the Interior Ministry's National Security Forces (NSF) called GROUP SIX. They answer directly to the Prime Minister and are sworn to protect the Japanese Constitution at all costs. They immediately begin to hear rumours of a rogue element of the GSDF Special Forces (JINRAI) maneuvering for a second coup attempt. These JINRAI are Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), fierce nationalist loyal to their love of country, and a desire to put Japan back into a position of strength and power. This begins the war in the shadows between the NSF and JINRAI. Last edited by Anshinritsumai; 07-04-2009 at 01:15 AM. Reason: NT:S officially released. |

Looks pretty generic, but I'll download so I can continue to waste my life.

I wish there were more Source mods that tried other game genres besides FPS.
How often do you hear about "[game] is a first person shooter on the Souce Engine..."

Generic indeed. That trailer got any excitement I could have possibly had about this game and buried it.
From the looks of it, there is zero innovation in terms of gameplay.

Sadly, it looks like they just re-skinned HL2:DM but with CS:S models.
Before the game play, it looked awesome. The game play section was 300% fail. Last edited by Mooga; 07-04-2009 at 05:23 AM. Reason: disable :)s |

Looks very nice, but I'm not really into HL2 mods anymore, they always feel sloppy and messy. FF is an exception, but eh, I'd rather just play a game rather than a modification.

I have to say that the HL1 mods were amazing. HL2 just doesn't have the same options. NS is still played to this day. Most HL2 mods burn out. I liked Zombie Panic, but it never held me for more then a few days.

Neotokyo has been pretty good so far. It's just a pain sometimes. But it has the polished feeling of a game more then a mod. It hasn't crashed once yet and has run pretty smooth for my aging system.
I like the gameplay as well, and the theme is perfect. I look forward to future updates to this mod. |

The game modes are pretty generic. Deathmatch is generic, and the Capture the Ghost mode (CTF) has been done before. Grab the 'ghost' and bring it to a capture point. It's essentially a tried variant of capture the flag. So, yes, there's not many game modes at this point in time.
There's nothing innovative in the game, really. There are three classes: Recon, Assault, and Support. Each one is built around generic 'weak, moderate, strong' class rules. The Recon is small and fragile, for grabbing the ghost and running out of the place. The Assault is for general use, deciding to fight or grab the ghost, an all-around good class. The Support is heavy, built like a tank, for defending or taking the front of attacks. Each class has a vision mode. Recon gets night vision, Assault gets motion tracking (targets glow more depending upon how fast they move), Support gets thermal imaging (Only things that produce a lot of heat show up. Can see through smoke, fog, etc.) Recon has infinite sprint, assault has limited sprint, and support has no sprint. Recon gets a leap attack. Assault has limited cloak and sprint. Support has neither. Recon gets a remote explosive. Assault gets a fragmentation grenade. Support gets two smoke grenades. There are a dozen or so guns to pick from. Considering the stats bars are so small, it's really just pick which ever weapon you think looks cool or fits your play style. There's some good diversity amongst the weapons, I'd say. There's assault rifles, silenced assault rifles, smgs, semi-automatic rifles, sniper rifles in semi-auto, sniper rifles in bolt action/one shot, semi-automatic shotgun with 4 special slugs, and a fully automatic shotgun as well. The more you play, and the better you do in an individual server, the more weapons you can pick and choose. The weapons are fired from the hip, but you can use some weird 'aim' mode which gives you a huge crosshair. Why no iron sights? Every server features one of the following: Snipers who hang a million miles away picking people off with the instant-kill bolt action or two-tapping people with the semi-auto. That, or failures who hide in the corner as recon and cloak, then dart out and spam you - a support class - to your death within seconds. So, it's essentially CS:S with more weapons and classes. Cloaking is more of an annoyance than a benefit. The viewing modes are pretty cool, but why make such good looking maps if I'm going to be staring at them from behind a grainy black/white filter or a thermal image? :/ It has potential. I like that two of the weapons have a special mode. The pistol for assault/support can be switched to fully automatic mode or you can load your AA12 shotgun with a slug for 'shotgun sniping'. One slug to the head will blow it clean off. Actually, that's literal. This game features some minor gore. Pretty cool. Now, add more gore. Add more specials. More gamemodes. The models look great. The maps look great. The sounds are superb. That's all good and fun, but the gameplay needs some 'spice'. |
