How will FF address mat hacks?
Whereby a player adds $translucent 1 and such to all their VMTs?

Short of going the usual routes (i.e. anti-cheat methods inherent to the Source engine like file consistency checks) there's little we can do about any kind of cheating on the first release.

VAC is useless when it comes to transparent walls.. You just need clear textures. Not that I would know or anything

The best way to deal with any hack is and will be a good admin team on the server.
1. A strong admin presence discourages hackers from being regulars since they often go for "easy servers" where no one is watching. 2. Hopefully there will be a DEMO-PLAYBACK only tool (like Xspec for HL1) that will allow admins to watch demos in wall hack mode. It makes it very easy to tell when someone is looking through the floor at someone. 3. Even without Xspec, a keen eye can spot someone wall hacking. Hackers are usually pretty dumb and just out to fuck around. Anyhoo, software anti-cheat measures are always a good idea. But there are always workarounds and thats why there will always be a need for a good admin. |

Just make the game so enjoyable that hackers would rather play straight than ruin the fun for themselves and everyone else.

Well, if you really put some think about mat hacks, they take a long time to be developed, because you need to make map per map, and with FF having such a large ammount of maps (done and beeing done) it'll take a real long time to do it.
CSS best mat hack has been done on August 2006, and the game has been there for some time now... So, let's say FF is released in 2007, it'll take at least 1 or 2 years for all default maps to be hacked, and if you want to do it on custom map, you can add some other years to the equation too. |
