Picmip settings

Quick question.

I'm interested in adjusting the FF textures to look like the higher picmip settings in Quake, like so:



Is this possible? I saw some textures that looked very similar, if not exactly the same, in the FF customs reddit thread:



If this is possible, how does one go about doing it? What can I say, I'm an FPS whore.

This wasn't really ever accepted in tfc/ff as it made models extremely easy to see. Of course there is really no way to stop it.. I don't know of any way to do it though without just redoing the textures to answer you.

Alrighty, thanks; I'll just stick with the config I'm using now.

And that's the point of adjusting the picmip -- to make your opponents easier to see. It's why top Quake players use it.

Yeah I know it is, I use it in quake, it was just majorly frowned upon in tfc/ff due to different styles.

textures like that were fairly commonly used in competitive tfc and were not frowned upon by those i knew. personally i find them of little benefit in tfc/ff so didn't/don't use them, but i have np with anyone who did/does and as far as i'm concerned the definition of what's acceptable and what's a cheat has been clear and unchanged since tfc days:

anything that makes available to the player additional gameplay-related information that would not otherwise be available is a cheat. anything that just presents the information that is available to the player in a clearer way is therefore not a cheat.

I generally agree about textures not being a cheat, unless it is something like transparent explosions.

In source, I'm pretty sure you can download transparent walls for Fortress-Forever. I wonder if there would be a way to block this without disabling custom skins.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but I'm posting this anyway. You could turn your gpu lod settings to 10 or so, I used ATI Tray Tools. Not quite sure how to do this with Nvidia cards. It makes pretty much everything a solid colour.

There was a period of a couple years where people in tfc used low picmip-ish textures; there was a set with a grid overlay that was quite popular. There were even a few avis featuring said textures with clear explosions, _special, nemesis, other advantage giving mods.

Eventually leagues started cracking down on customs that would give an advantage and these kinds of things started to disappear. But yea, the general consensus of the current tfc community and ff community is "hax," where as you've noticed low picmip in quake is fairly standard, the game even comes with bright green models built in to complement it. Goes to show how different communities have different opinions of what's ok.

Hell, Warsow has a mode called 'contrast', which makes every block a single colour. :P

I'd really say it's up to the user whether they prefer the cleaner look or the 'better' look, though I can see why some people would have a problem with it.

The less clutter, the easier it is to notice cloaked spies moving, and seen as spies pretty much HAVE to rely on people not noticing them, it's a little harder if everyone has clean textures. :L

I would play FF like that. Looks like the lighting would be super annoying though.

Those images look very sexy. Definitely would play like that too, but I suppose judging by how this game's community would react I guess I will leave graphics at default.
