The original rock was for QWTF. Crossover was originally released for TFC but had a bug that caused one team's doors to trigger the other team's corresponding door so I think the 2 was added to the name when valve fixed their mistake (could be wrong on this count). Cz2 was so called because there was a map for QWTF called "canal zone" which was a huge 10v10 capture point map. Cz2 was introduced for TFC and used a similar style but was a totally different map, hence the 2. Well originated in QWTF and the final(ish) version was called well6. It was created by Sgt. Thundercock I believe.
In short, a lot of maps have QWTF roots. |

Pretty sure we are talking pre TFC days here, ie maps that were made for quake TF. New versions based on those were made for TFC, hence the '2'.

Someone ported canalzon over to TFC at one point.
It was cool looking, but I never saw a server running it. |

Hmm, I still vaguely remember what the original Rock was like. The original Rock2 had something that the current version doesn't have: there was a fourth doorway in the courtyard, opposite the main entrance. It led straight to the gas chamber, but you had to (afaim) detpack a generator there, first. Or shoot it a lot with your teammates. I forget. Anyway, destroying the generator lowered the force field protecting the alternate entrance to the gas chamber, and I think it also knocked out the search lights.
I didn't play CZ a lot, but it was very cool. CZ2 has nothing to do with the original, really. |

as for the original CZ
I remember finding ways to get lost on that map every time I played it I knew the way to the cap points but if I strayed off the conc routes I had learned I was always taking wrong turns hehe.

Sgt. Thundercok was the preeminent mapper for QWTF. Author of both rock2 and well6 as well as the wacky map spazball (I don't believe this was ever ported).
