Quake 3 Fortress help.

Hey guys, I was wondering that since the FAQ and Forums on the Q3F site is down, if anybody can give me some help.

I was trying to start a game, but each time, it failed with "Hunk_alloc", that it needed more memory (I don't know what's it talking about.. if they are talking about physical memory, I have 1 GB DDR4) and told me to "set +hunkmem 96" or something similar. I did so in the console, just like I said, but it said it was an unknown command. Can anybody help me out?

Q: When i try to connect to a server i get kicked back to the main menu with error "+set com_hunkmegs 96"
A: In order to fix this you need to allocate more memory for Quake 3. To do so make a shortcut to quake3.exe. Right click on quake3.exe > Create shortcut. Now right click on the shortcut and goto properties. Now see the Textbox "Target". Add outside the "quotes" +set fs_game q3f2 +set com_hunkmegs 120

For com_hunkmegs, set it to 2/3's the amount of Ram. Must be higher than 96 to be able to load maps. The Target Path should look something like this:
"H:\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game q3f2 +set com_hunkmegs 120
Now use the shortcut to load Q3F2.

Q: I'm getting stuck on 'Awaiting Snapshot'
A: Ok, first make sure you set com_hunkmegs high enough. Do this by adding +set com_hunkmegs 96 or so to the commandline when you start Q3F. Also make sure that you close all background applications as IRC, Gamespy, ICQ, virus scanners, email programs, office taskbar etc etc etc. You might want to tweak it some more, especially on 96 meg systems as while Q3F supports them, for some bigger maps it is tricky to get it running.

Some other things you can try are network related. Before connecting to a server set 'rate 2000;snaps 20;cl_maxpackets 20'. When ingame, you can increase these settings. This should make it easier for you to join a server and get past the initial snapshot. Or see the question above about starting Q3F2 from a shortcut.

Q: My config settings are screwed up everytime I goto play Q3F. Whats up with that?
A: Load Q3F2 from a shortcut by adding +set fs_game q3f2 to the command line eg. ( "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game q3f2 +set com_hunkmegs 96), better yet get a decent game browser (GameSpy, All Seeing Eye).

This problem comes from load Q3F2 from the MODS tab or by not using +set fs_game q3f2. When that happens the first config to be loaded is your Q3A config and if the setting are different from Q3F2 you will have problems

its hunkmegs. set it in the config file.

I used to set mine up pretty high, try 512 and see how it goes.
Also you can raise the level of frames per second it will show when you enable it.

Q3F is now 100% free to play without the need of Q3, right?
And does the linked version work without Q3?
And does anyone still play online?

That is incorrect. Q3F requires q3 to play. ETF was a remake of q3f b2.0. Its ETF that is free and doesn't require q3 to play. ETF is a mod for a free game called Enemy Territory......blah blah blah.

Unless that new q3fxtreme thing mulletman does....I know very little about it.

But Q3F just uses the Q3 engion which went open source just a year or two ago. I know that Q3 also stooped checking for legal keys then as well.

Well there's this TF thingy which appears to be based on a free Q3 engine.
It's also got some other links dealing with enhancing the Q3 engine.
