FF_EgyptianCurse
Here are some screenshots of a map I'm currently working on for another ctf mod but plan to convert over to FF also. I noticed someone just started a egypt theme map, but two is better then one..no? It's about 75% done atm and any comments are welcome.

cool theme, i like the indoors, but the outdoors doesn't tie in very well with the egyptian concept... sandy textures would do this map wonders, with a more sedementary rock texture

With a bit more work and polish this could potentially be a very beautiful map. My suggestions/comments: 1. Get rid of the grey rock models outside and replace them with a giant pyramid or two. 2. Have a look around the internet for scenic pictures of the pyramids, egyptian artifacts, statues, murals 3. Maybe even design it so that each base is a pyramid. 4. There seems to be no clear cut theme. It is of course Egyptian, but is it in the desert, is it in the middle of an oasis, is it in a well kept garden? If it is set hundreds of years ago, which I am guessing is what you wanted as the buildings are in perfect condition, then the courtyard should naturally be well kept with flora and fauna, palm trees, and grass. If you would rather set it in the present, then there would be desert, or dust, and the buildings would not have perfect angles (a bit like this): Personally I think a ruined present day look, although more work, would be more beautiful, interesting and possibly more fun as a challenge for you as a mapper to research and recreate. Couple that with a great level design and you are on to a winner. 5. Basically, work out a solid theme in your mind, iron out any inconsistencies, (like the tree type, the yellow hazard symbols and the pipes, the crucifixes etc.) and go for it. The reason you went for an egyptian themed map as opposed to a standard CTF map is surely to impress the player visually, your theme not intending to affect gameplay in any way. So, as long as you justify using a theme by making it great fun to look at, you should do fine. |

Looks like one of them UT maps with futuristic egyptian theme. If there werent for them maps.
As I have been in egypt, the pyramids didnt look anything like that from inside. Now dont get me wrong, it's a nice start, but still needs lots of loving hand to make it shine like a diamond. So here it is in short: -Nice start -Still needs polishing (75% anyway, that should be obvious) EDIT: -And the textures really need normal maps to make it look not so 2000ish |

It looks like a good start, and I really like the egyptianish textures. I'd add that you should ditch a lot of the spraypaint decals, like those in the second shot.

Well like I said from the start, it is a convert over from another mod. There it's themed more like the conbines have found a secret temple complex and started converting it for a base. When the rebels find out about this, they well of couse decide to fight for it as well...etc... So that's why it has a old/new/odd way to it with the decals ect. Once it get's done for that other mod, then will custom it more towards this one. Just need to find someone to make custom decals/models etc. lol

I personally play the HL2CTF mod for HL2 DM, and I would love to see this map with some of the changes above. Whenever I think of an egypt theme I don't think of spraypaint/water/green, but instead dusty dirty wornout. I hpe you take some of the suggestions, and turn it into an excelent map.

The cliffs and the trees on the outside of the map really throw everything off. Like other people said, go with more of a desert theme. I think it would be cool if you had a sky cube that could make it look like a court yard out in the middle of the desert, kind of like an oasis.

Oh one thing, anyone have any nice blended sand textures? The ones in hl2 also include grass and sort of looks out of place. |

No please, go with the theme, just do it like in futuristic mode.
Kinda like this: http://buf.beyondunreal.com/images/ut2003/face.jpg And I dont mean to copy that or anything, just make it look like a futuristic old egypt. |

Good looking map so far, can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished. I loved the idea of having the two bases being pyramids...can't get much more Egyptian than that!

Also I might have to go L shaped for the top bases, having trouble keeping the fps green/yellow and that's with using all the tricks. Think that would kill the feel of it? |
