Best AGP Card for gaming? *Moved from General*

Hey, I was wondering if it was worth upgrading just a video card to another agp card? I have a 3.0 ghz, 1 gb sdram pc3200 ram, and the x800 pro 256 mb AGP card. I'd like to run hl2 with max settings, I am just wondering if there's a good AGP card to upgrade to that I will actually notice a difference. Does anyone know good AGP cards to go with for gaming? Thanks..

Good luck getting to max settings with AGP. With PCI-e x16 being the current standard, I don't even see support for AGP cards within the next few years.

I'd save for a new rig entirely.

I plan on doing that eventually, I just thought maybe I can pickup a cheap card that'll do the job for a little while longer. HL2 doesn't play bad at all on the current setup, which surprised me. I use the recommended settings which aren't bad, was just hoping to get some more performance out of it. BaliAghi suggested that I get the Geforce 7950 GT, what do you think?

I'm not familiar with ATI cards, but the equivalent ones will be just as good. I used to be an nVidia fanboy, then I got over it. As a result, I'm not too knowledgeable on ATI cards. Am I going to say "OMFG DEY SUK LOLOLOLOL"? like what you did with nVidia cards? No.

Sizeable, it's not. AGP will be here for awhile, untill Intel starts fully cutting off support. However, it can still be leeched (there's absolutely no benefit outside of dual-card processing with PCI-E. AGP 8x hasn't even been a bottleneck yet). Companies aren't going to drop it when it's still fast enough.

yeah, umm in not sure if agp can support the high end game cards tho to full potential. my guess would be since its a smaller port size that the rates would be lower then pcie. that or at least eventually agp will max out.

The problem is that modern processors can't send ENOUGH information through the bus to even fill up AGP 8x to its fullest potential. PCI-E is half technological advancement, half marketing. The statement "Horsepower sells cars, torque moves them." is akin to "Megahertz sells technology, performance runs it."

didn't bother reading beyond the first post. You discussed this in your other thread. Again if you can already run half-life 2 you don't need to.... If you can't well... Yes, the most expensive one you can afford.

Common sense and knowledge?

Well, if I can run it in full settings by spending $100, why would I buy a $500 agp card. I know this card isn't going to be used for 5 years or anything, so I don't want to put a ton of money into it...that's the point. I am just wondering what a good performance video card is that is also cheap.

The newer models than your current card, at price you are happy with and can afford...

Any of these perhaps.
The BFG NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB AGP
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS OC 512MB AGP
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 512MB AGP#
Edit: They don't have to BFG or Nvidia, those were just the ones I looked up first.

Yes, the thread started talking about cards and I thought I should make another thread since it was going off-topic

Here you go:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/09/...ney/page5.html

There is a comparison chart at the very end so you can see how one card compares to another.

KillaB...

I'm glad you brought this up bro.

I think I'll get this: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814102071
-damn, that card is 9.5 inches long.... I better check my case for room.

I definitely have no business trying to buy a new computer right now.

Perhaps this card could give me another year or 2.
