Thoughts on Fortress Forever

I was a fan of TFC back in the day and just tried out Fortress Forever. Was fun the other night but I found a few things that were dissapointing. I can tell it's not designed to be like TFC, but what was the reasoning behind removing Caltrops and Spy Gas? Both were quite enjoyable and I don't see the point of removing them from the fortress series. Also I found pyro to be the best class in the game. 3 stacks of fire and anyones dead, really? I know pyro sucked in TFC but now it's just stupid lol.. From a match point of view I don't see the point of playing anything but Scout and Medic for offense. Maybe demoman to detpack a wall. Spy is to slow and without gas quite useless in my opinon. Defense seems like the classic Soldier Demoman Engi and HW. So that leaves sniper and pyro being useless yet again besides public games. I think the game would be much better if it was focused to be like TFC source honestly. I don't see a place for teleporters, but I think people were expecting TFC source and that's why this community is so small. Unless there's Dev issues with getting things done. I'd say add caltrops, spy gas, fix pyros, and build some maps geared towards the fortress forever play style. Community seems friendly enough after playing for awhile, but i'd like to see the game have more abilities for a few classes. Some extras to make the game fun

Pyro and Sniper are seen to be OP by all, that's why the classes are blocked on pickup games.

But you've pretty much picked up on all the problems with the current state of FF.

Generally, we just forget about the fact some classes don't work for some gamemodes / teams, and just play regardless.

I don't think anyone really cares about the fact you can't really pick classes that aren't built for that mode / team, but of course, there are a few exceptions, that being O Solly's (to open up fr), and D Medic's (to stop offence opening up fr)

The game's fun, you've just gotta get used to how it rolls. Kinda sucks for the new players that there's no gameplay guide, no way of telling what class they should pick for each team on each gamemode inside of the game.

With Blackhawks and hookers.

Spy gas is just spam, caltrops are useless aside from trolling by dropping them at the spawn door, and you can still mostly ignore the pyro.

Exactly. Gas nade was spam, caltrops hindered movement without really feeling rewarding as a scout. Sort of "Spray and pray" except "drop and pray".

And it' s a step up in balance to make the scout now viable in offense. TFC was so often 4 medic offense.

If you focused on making TFC Source you would have the exact same problems as TFC.

As for sniper and pyro?

Fuck them both. Fuck them long, fuck them hard. Fuck them forever. FORTRESS Forever, that is. I am a very angry person.

I'm tellin ya, hallucination nades from TFC would be a lot better for spy to replace the gas grenade in FF. not slow movement necessarily, but seeing random explosions/grenades that arent real would be coo.

But for some reason, the hallucation effect doesn't have much impact on me in TFC, maybe its because of the GldSrc engine. Like how players can set the graphical settings so they can see through the smoke grenade in CS 1.6

its better than nothing and it works

even perhaps instead of a gas grenade how about a smoke grenade used for quick escapes. spy doesn't have to have to have an offensive nade. ofc its basically the same thing as a gas nade and still spmaable. but an interesting dynamic would be if the smoke grenade made the snipers lazer go wack making it not able to shoot through the smoke as easily making snipers less powerful. just a thought. (the old smoke and mirrors.)

I like this idea, but I think something cool that it could add would be an effect on the spy that lasts a few seconds. When he goes into the smoke, he could get an effect for 5-10 seconds that makes it so his cloak doesn't shimmer when he moves.

Think of the potential mindgames with this: You are playing offence on destroy, and you throw a smoke grenade from front door going to the soldier spot: Walk into the smoke as if you are going through it, cloak, then turn around and go the heavy way.

I think it would be interesting, and would add alot of depth to the class.

The interaction oaties posted sounds interesting. But a smoke grenade would be fucking obnoxious.

I think most people have heard my smoke gren idea. Ninja smoke bombs! Kinda like this guy.


You could only hh it so no spam. When it goes off you go into cloak and get boosted in whichever direction you're moving. Not a huge boost, something like 1/4 of a jump pad. Then cloak persists for a couple seconds allowing you to sneak into a decent spot (behind the demo or around the gun). It's that "fast stealthiness" that the dev team talks about wanting to achieve, it's spam free, and brings the awesomeness of the ninja to spy. Fake out the soldier, time the smoke nade so it goes off right when you pass him then stab the demo. The clutch move possibilities are endless!

I'd love to see both caltrops and gas grens come back, even if they're edited to something new alltogether. They were classic "flavor" additions in the original.

Than it'd be really hard to kill heavies and soldiers as most other classes. Also, conc grende jumping is extremely important, you can't really remove that..
