I have heard them downplay the sexual aspect of it, though. I mean, that would just be a fetish. It's not like anthropomorphic animals exist in real-life, either, so it's pretty.. I don't want to say contrived... 'invented' maybe?

Actually, it's Yiff's that are sexually attracted to anthro animals. Furries aren't. All yiffs are furries, all furries are not yiffs. Confusion is understandable between the two, mostly from mainstream media, given that they can't tell the difference between the Cutter and the Spreader (both are called Jaws by them).
