I Could Care Less
So I recently (ish) discovered that some Americans say "I could care less" even though they mean "I could not care less"....

I COULD care less but i'm so beyond caring at this point that I don't really see any benefit to caring any less whatsoever.
Stating that I couldn't care less means that I cared enough in the first place to minimize my caring all the way down to zero which is way more attention than this deserves. Hence the term.. I could care less. Thanks, -Icculus |

The statement actually needs an identifyer, such as "I could care less, but it's not worth the effort." or "I really couldn't care less." The latter of which is indicitive of lacking the ability to care less. I'll grant you, with typed text, the varient of meaning is difficult to assertain. Of course, this could be said of many statements.

You're asking for this out of people that have problems with "too, to, and two."

The English language is the problem, not the speakers.

The "aksed" one does bother me actually. Seems to be mostly from Afro Yanks.
We have one here... some real thickos say hospical instead of hospital. I was just surprised people said "I could"...

Yeah, don't get me started on Cockneys! Thankfully I don't live anywhere near London.
I wasn't having a bash at Americans, they just happened to be the wrong doers.

I could go on about alot of mispronunciations, because really, they all drive me nuts. Fucked up thing is, most of the people who bitch about "foreigners"(mostly Mexicans(which aren't all Mexican, but we can lump all brown people into that demograph)) not speaking English(or as I call it, American), are the same people who can't/don't/won't speak properly themselves. I think that bugs me more than anything.

English is highly non-phonetic. We have 26 letters to represent 40 sounds. We also have silent letters. So, bitching about pronunciation is really unnecessary, and makes you look like a dick. Oh, by the way, "aks" is the pronunciation of "axe", so why are you saying "Although, around here it sounds more like 'axe'"? Same fucking thing!

Sorry, Iggy. If you're going to bash on people for poorly speaking English, work on yours. Last edited by Etzell; 12-13-2010 at 11:34 PM. |

lololol
as for the topic of the thread, this is naturally what occurs when you bog down people with too many rules, especially regarding language. when i write a sentence, im thinking in my head about what sounds good, based on my conditioning, i don't sit back and argue with my self about subject-noun agreement and all that bullshit, and english is absolutely full of retarded rules. language becomes colloquial, regardless of rules. that's why people from certain areas mispronounce things alike, or use different words altogether. if people actually followed the stated rules of language, i think it would be far more annoying than listening to people who break the 'rules'. i cant remember how many times i sat in english class and my teacher was teaching us some arcane rule in english, and then she would put aside a couple seconds to explain that, oh, well, they don't really do it like this anymore, or she'd explain that a sentence that sounded really gay was actually correct and the way everyone else did it was incorrect.
