Pixelux Physics - Digital Molecular Matter
This is a demo of a new physics engine (think Havok, or Ageia PhysX); except instead of the basic modeling where things break only on faces and have to have pre-made gib models for destroyed versions of an object within a game; this takes the model and gives it an actual volumetric amount so it can break realistically.
Take a vase or a pot for example, obviously when modeling in Maya or 3DS Max, it's hollow inside; unless you actually go in a painstakingly model an interior to the pot or vase. Now, what this does is allows you to take that painstakingly interior modeled vase or pot, and give it an actual volume between the interior and exterior walls of the vase so it's not hollow, then breaks in realistic fashions based on force, pressure, type of material, etc. This demo specifically shows a fortress being sieged by some boulders, and the affected areas of the fortress fall and collapse in a fashion realistically to that of say a real siege. http://www.pixeluxentertainment.com/...castletoon.wmv This physics engine is coming very soon to video games and it's first scheduled release is in 2008 with Star Wars: Force Unleashed. Discuss? |

While the polygons in the demo were very basic, the fact that they can actually do that is amazing. Looking forward to it in video games .

Those rocks didn't take down the tower in that graphics video, it's clear that it wouldn't fall like that. George bush took down that castle tower using special explosives inside, just as the rocks hit. It was all planned by his administration.

Wow.. They really overdid the graphics..
I know the main goal isn't based around the graphics themselves but at least get a picture thats easy on a gamer's eyes. |

You are supposed to focus on the physics, not the models.
Think of how this can speed up time in movie production, not just gaming... applying this engine to models can save so much time. Remember Warcraft III, when Archimonde destroyed Dalaran? I bet they only animated the one tower going down because it would have been too much work to show the entire city coming down. With this software, they could have shown the entire city being torn down. Think of the poor bastards who had to animate that by hand instead of just making the models/textures and running it through the physics engine.

Computers are being used more and more in movies (obviously), especially to show things on the grand scale.
Eventually, the miniature model making industry could lose a hella lot of business. All those soldiers in the giant battles in the LotR movies were actually computed generated. A program was made wherein each minature model "soldier" had its own randomized behavior, like how it ran and looked. Pretty bitchin'. Hell, soon enough, actors might be outta work too. Ever see the movie "Simone"? d:

Presumably you would tag individual models as "breakable" and "unbreakable"; this is probably why the stones did not sink through the ground or something.
