When they first showed up, it was funny how so many people thought those were Hl3 screenshots.

Lol! well from first sights I could tell they were just superimposed with some nice environment settings, its stell very nice looking though. Obviously fakes, if you look at the ball it doesn't reflect any of the objects in the foreground

They're HDRI tests for a movie they're making and the sphere is the reflective maps for the lighting.

All I meant was that whats the point in the sphere in the scene if it doesn't reflect the scene itself *shrugs* no matter.

sadly, it will be a good 6-8 years before we even get close to that sort of quality, id say. but OMG we are ever increasingly blurring the divide between CG and reality

You'd be surprised at just how fast things are moving. Lighting technology such as HDR is transforming games in terms of realism -- just take a look at the new PS3 & Xbox 360 videos from e3. At times you could do a double take and mistake some of the gameplay (such as the racing games) for being real, or at the very least, pre-rendered cutscenes. Obviously this is partly because the videos are low res, but it just shows you how quickly things are moving. Carmack really started something with the Doom3 engine when he implemented a lighting system that was eons ahead of most game engines. Stuff that has traditionally been employed in movies & pre-rendered techniques is now pushing its way into real-time gaming.

while the software side is seeing rapid improvements, hardware is the slower part, but at the end of the day all its about is more processing power and more memory. cram about 10x todays power onto one card, and youve got yourself a winner

The thing that bothers me about it is the fact that everything looks like its wrapped in plastic wrap, or coated with Thompson's water sealant. So damn shiny.

I'm sure it'll take just as long for multi-threaded apps to appear to make dual-core CPUs worth buying for the average gamer. |

The most realistic game I've seen is the upcoming (and by upcoming, I mean repeatedly delayed) S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
