But I understand their position. I mean, why finish a trilogy of games with wonderful characters, interesting gameplay, an amazing orchestral score, and a hot, marketable main character when you can run Rainbox Six and Splinter Cell into the ground?

aye. it's all downhill for ubi. all their new games are stupid tom clancy ones, and they ruined them. splinter cell is some weird assasin's creed knockoff now, and rainbow six is.... just. Bleh. I'm disgusted with Ubisoft. Ihmhi remembers, there was a thread on Ubi's forum when they asked what you think of the company, and when you think when you see it's logo. it was almost completely negative. most of the people were pissed about the noobing and ruining of franchises, and ihmhi posted about how he wanted sequels for BGAE.

If a game develops a premade story for a premade character and you're following it along, that's not an RPG. That's a movie you can push buttons to.

Unless your decisions actively affect the course of the game, and can change how your character acts and is reacted to, it's not an RPG.

I think what Credge meant is that it doesn't need to be DnD to be labeled as an RPG. I wouldn't go as far as he is thought.

Ok, first of all, a game is defined as being an RPG if your character somehow gains strength/abilities/whatever through defeating enemies.
So, like all Final Fantasy games, SOTN, battlefield 2 etc are all RPGs, technically.

It was a joke. I was being a dick. I do indeed understand that facts and opinions are mutually exclusive.

That being said, I do think that FF8 had terrible story telling. The problem with the game is there was no plot. Every event in the game was essentially random and had little or no bearing on past or future events (except, actually, some of the character relationships). But it wasn't a story. There was no theme or plot or message. Some character, but that's not enough by itself. FF7 had a plot, and themes, and such vastly deeper and more complicated characters.

I think FF6 beat FF7 in terms of story/characters, but holy christ, how can you say FF8 had a good storytelling?
