Microsoft issues emergency fixes for Vista

A few hundred megabytes short of a service pack

By Andrew Thomas: Wednesday 08 August 2007, 12:52

MICROSOFT HAS ISSUED two updates for Vista, rated 'important', that address performance and reliability problems. The updates have a combined size of 5.7Mb and both require a system restart. They have yet to be made available through Windows Update. Both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista are affected.

The fixes have been floating around in beta guise for a few weeks, but fall well short of being the rumoured Vista SP1 discussed on the sort of forums that discuss such things. Downloading and installing the patches is quick and easy apart from the annoyance of two restarts. No noticeable performance oreliability improvements are immediately apparent on the two machines we tried it on (2 Gig 2.7GHz Core 2 Duo and 768MB 2.4GHz P4), but they were already pretty fast and reliable anyway.

Performance problems have cropped up with screen savers, network printers, corrupt AVI files, slow response times and corrupted RAW files with some Canon cameras. More serious problems addressed by the patch include corruption of offline files and machines forgetting their default gateway addresses. Memory management has also been improved, says the company.

Reliability improvements cover display drivers, PPP network connections and unexpected restarts.

More details here and here

Yeah and WP to my fucking laptopmanufacturer for not providing support for the ati radeon mobility 9000. I tried playing TFC yesterday (on Vista); I got a stable 10-20fps , not bad for a Centrino 1.6GHz. with 1.5GB of RAM ey? (I just see that they've released an update btw ). I also mailed microsoft today if I can switch vista business oem for xp prof. oem, hope that works

That puzzles me that they refer to it as the "rumored" SP. MS themselves had information on their site about it. Rumor doesn't seem like the right word for it when it comes from them directly.

I hope Vista is as stable as Windows XP (even tho xp aint exactly stable itself, and I'm hoping for too much from Microsoft) in a few months, I will probably be getting Ultimate for my computer I'm currently building.

That seems to be the only problem I get with Vista Ultimate... my internet will randomly shut off because it loses the DNS and all that jazz....

That seems to be gone, too.

I have to say, these two little patches have really made Vista work like a charm.

Yeah, that would be a NO. Stick with XP. Installing Vista on your system is probably the dumbest thing you can do if you are a gamer. Or, ya know, you like to use your computer as something more than a several hundred dollar paperweight.

Hmmm... then how come I can play games just dandy?

Very soon, Vista will be the standard, whether you like it or not. Get used to it. People said the same thing ab XP- and 98, when that came out. And 95, when that came out. That's the way things work.

Yeah, XP's debut was pretty good, by Windows standards anyway.

I can quote from memory at the very least, a dozen times were people said one should stick with 98.

Even if Vista DID suck- it's still gonna be the standard, because that's all people are really going to get, nothing else is packaged with new desktops, so yea, eventually, one will have to upgrade...

Well, to be more specific, they won't HAVE to, because most games will probably still support XP, but once their old PC dies, and they have to get a new one... MS probably won't be producing XP too much longer, and Vista is, again, going to be on most new desktops.

MS was quicker about addressing some of the early issues with XP. Remember the UPNP vulnerability? IIRC a fix for that released within the first month. The bug issues with XP and Vista have been different though. With XP it was exploits that were discovered. And remember the HUGE performance hit when SP1 release for XP? With Vista they've had some exploits but MS has downplayed their significance. What I hear more of with Vista is issues with the overly restrictive security environment.

Fuck Microsoft, I contacted them asking if it was possible to downgrade from Vista Business OEM to XP Prof; and they told me that it was possible; but you need (to own) an original XP Prof. OEM CD (which strangely enough may be installed on another computer) and you have to call the M$ hotline to activate it. I think that's horribly gay because I dont have a stupid XP Prof. OEM CD.

Makes me want to say “aarr matey I be plundrin` agayn”

Im with SizeableSSonic Vista is a great OS. I Cant fault it at the moment, as an end user i have only had one problem and that was with wireless Card drivers (which is the fault of Belkin not MS)

Im running Vista Business x64.

Playing games fine, if not better than i did in XP.
It may not fit the bill quite yet for some people because of driver or program incapabilities, but on the whole thats not really microsofts fault.

Addendum: Until after the first Service Pack comes out.

Seriously, gais, remember the rules of Windows.

DON'T TOUCH THE NEW WINDOWS UNTIL A SERVICE PACK COMES OUT.

I can not wait for Microsoft Surface to come out... "Someone hacked my coffee table and loaded a blown up image of goatse onto it."

Been happy with Vista so far, but that's on a laptop I don't game on. Gaming performance generally goes down considerably with each new Windows version released, so that's no surprise really..

Win98 destroyed 2k/XP in 3d performance for a long time..
