I was going to make a thread, but I will be conservative. I know VERY little about vid cards and sys info, but I put everything under video->adv on low. I don't know what half of the other things under video means, so if I were to change something on there that could help, let me know. I have res on 800x600.

My problems are choppiness, fps spikes, and my computer has completely frozen twice now.

Windows XP Media
2.00GHz processor
2.00GB ram
GeForce Go6600

Yea, laptop. Also my rates, I live in apartments so I share a connection most likely:

updaterate 40
cmdrate 60
rate 12000

I'll try disabling friends as well.

edit: I also updated my video drivers via Alienware.

same Problem here

I got:
AMD Athlon 2600+ Barton (maybe it really has something to do with barton)
Nvidia Gefroce 6800 @GT
1024MB Ram
Forceware 162.18
6000Mbit DSL

I updated my Graphics driver like told in the hl2 tweak thing.
I put EVERYTHING to low....DX7.0
disabled this Friends thing....
When I´m inside a small room I have about 100FPS. When i walk outside to a yard all-allone in a lan-game I have about 60-80 FPS. But in an INternnet game with players allaround it falls to 16 FPS ...... thats poor.....that sucks.....

Some more people seem to ahve this problem too.....what about a sticky??

and BTW.: Its a FF problem.....HL2 + CSS workin fine!!

I'm running now at 800x600, all options lowest, Steam Community off, FPS config, and -dxlevel 70.

The game is playable, but it's not smooth. I get worse performance than a lot of people who I know have worse computers, that I don't really see in other Source games.

However, since the recent Steam update which dealt with Steam Community, there is the possibility that your internet connection settings have been re-set to the default connection settings that Steam gives for each type of connection.

You will see through Steam Settings, on the new overlay there is the Downloads Tab which has a box for "approximate speed of your internet connection". With this latest update, it seems rates have been automatically re-set for the default values that Steam gives for whatever connection is listed there.

So you might find your rate is now set to what Steam thinks is the default rate value for DSL > 768k (for example) whereas you usually use a different rate value which (through tweaking) you've determined is better for your particular connection.

I found my game lagging since the recent update. I fixed it when I happened to notice my rate value was different than it normally was. I manually re-set it to my normal rate setting and the lag has gone away.
At the very least you can check the settings just as an additional precaution.

To those of you that are having bad performance how much tweaking have you done in your display properties? And if so what have you changed?

If you mean under the video tab in game, I have set everything on low than can go low. I do not know what some of the other tabs mean, so I didn't mess with them.

I also got the fps cfg yesterday and it made a huge difference, despite the black concs :/

I'm fighting the good fight to run FF smoothly as well. Though i'm sure the problems are not entirely FF's fault but half-life 2's in general.

my system: P4 1.6, 1GB DDR RAM, GeForce 7800GT 512MB, SB Audigy 2ZS

my launch options: -heapsize 512000 -dxlevel 70 +exec autoconfig.cfg

my autoexec:
snd_mixahead 0.7
cl_forcepreload 1
sv_forcepreload 1
cl_smooth 0
snd_async_fullyasync 1

I got a good 40-50fps when around my base, in spawn rooms, just running around battlements with teammates. Once i start running toward the action my game will plummet to 5-10fps. I think it's mostly from explosions and hwguy chainguns.

I turned off the in-game steam community but didn't do much good.

For those who use Nvidia, I had to use the beta drivers from September 10

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_do...etadriver.html

163.67 for XP 32bit on 7800GT

Also used Driver Cleaner posted by 4est

Hrist: The P4 1.6 is what's holding you back -- you'll be almost totally CPU limited, I'm afraid.

Your card sounds like it's limiting you but I could be wrong, and theres no real way to check. Do you get these problems when you start your own server? How do you perform on other mods?

Does anyone know how to get older Nvidia drivers? I have the current driver too and would like to try an older one that may have worked better.

For those, who havent clicked the link from 4est:

Download DirectX 9.0c September 2007 release!
Now my fps are a little higher, but not good. Give it a try! Maybe it's just my hardware.

What problems did you have before and what results did you get after?

Agreed, anything on a P4 sub 2Ghz or AMD Athlon less than a 3500+ will almost certainly be CPU limited and I wouldn't suggest anything above low details or 800*600.

Just because you can run HL2/CSS means diddly squat, those games have had 3 years of engine optimisations since release not to mention are nowhere near the level of detail such as modern games and mods.

TF2 is reputed to be the most demanding Source game to date...
