I think your reasons are good and that's why it would be worth considering, but you make a faulty assumption that it has to be the default league play format for it to be adopted in LANs. Like someone already suggested, if CAL were to create an FF league with your gameplay format implemented, then it's likely that people could enjoy both 9v9/8v8 and 5v5/4v4 OvD for LANs. Having 9v9 and 8v8 allows more people to play for longer periods of time which means more fun and less watching your teammates on HLTV. It wouldn't be worth it to sacrifice that for the small number of people who participate in LANs. Therefore, the best thing to do would be to take it up with CAL and try to get just one league to adopt your format instead of all leagues.

Wait wait.. as in 5v5 Attack/Defend, you mean one side attacks while other defends?? im not sure if i'm misquoting anyone here..

But what did you mean it would be more spectator friendly? because less people? I think bigger matches attract more people because there are varying styles and skill levels.

Personally, I was a STA 5v5er; loved the semi small, manageable team aspect. We would designate a O/D captain and they had to manage a few people, with a set limit on max D, it was really fun seeing those teams who would go in with 3 O.. But TFC worked as it was. 9v9 and 5v5 co-existed excellently. It was two similar playing styles with a few different aspects and strategies. Promoting one over the other (as i just did >.<) is a worthless idea.

Anyways, it's as the community shifts. If more people are liking 9v9, 9v9 will become commonplace. If people are playing 3v7.5, then that will be the norm. They can all function together, and people can spread through the leagues.

OvD 4v4 for CTF is more spectator friendly because you can generally follow all the action at the single objective in play, vs having to split time between one base and the other. You don't miss out on half the game, given the limit of one pov to view from.

This format would actually work very well for organized play, allowing more teams and lower team size requirements. For competitive LAN play, you could have the team size requirement between 4 and 8, with players able to swap in and out at half time for the O to D switch.

The map format would be pretty flexible too. Either 30x2, 20x2, 15x4 etc.

5v5 Full is good too, if the maps are designed with that team size in mind. TF is pretty incredible though in that you can have 2v2 through 10v10 on some maps, and everything in between.

I dislike playing OvD CTF games, as a player
however, as Dospac said, I much prefer OvD for watching

I like both 8v8 is nice when you have a tight game on the end and a flag can decide. The "feeling" is better.

4v4 is better overall because you have more teams, it's easier to get a server and as someone above said, the players will have to learn more classes and such.

Don't know to point out the better system. Would be nice to have both of them going on.

I really enjoyed the 5 vs 5 Vitality league which was run many moons ago. Shame it only lasted a season or so. Some really interesting maps and as it was just an aside to normal leagues, it was much more fun.

As for 5 vs 5, O vs D, that idea is utter toss.

I dont think FF is going to go CPL with 8v8, it has never handled teams that big, for any game, as far as I know. I think thats the big reason for bf2 and tfc not really making the scene. Realistically if its gonna compete i think 4v4 / 5v5 OvD is the way to go.

Smaller team size means people can get together and make clans with their mates from college too, like my brother has for CS. Even i play some CS games with RL mates sometimes, cos its easy to get 4-5 players on.

Bigger team size means more team spirit though, and people can specialise in one task (e.g. engineer) but on the other hand, you dont get to try different things so much. I wouldnt want to be swapping O and D at half time tho.. that would suck. Imagine in a CS game everyone swapping when you go CT or T. People don't sub out in NS when you go alien / marine either.

I guess if 4v4 / 5v5 OvD became the norm, you could make 1 sided OvD CTF maps, kinda like one half of 2fort with only one flag :E

8v8 matches can be annoying when you're on defense and stopping everything coming your way, but your offense can't cap - or you're capping nonstop on offense but your defense is leaking everything. in 4v4 / 5v5 individual players would make much more of a difference.

Also in clans, theres a kinda offense-defense split sometimes, with them on different ventrilo channels and different ideas of who they want in the team (and whether you should play 4-4 or 5-3).

All this sounds pro 4v4, but it has to be said, I prefer playing 8v8 TFC - not quite sure why. Might just be habit. Then again, 4v4 teams could join up to play 8v8 games.

I am thinking of opening up a 4v4 or 5v5 League

2 Offense/2 Defense
or 3 Offense/2 Defense

NO OvO

Some people did... it depends on your players I guess. For example, it wasn't too uncommon to have your commander sit Alien half.

Pfah. 5v5, full game, no rules. If they try to OvO, learn to move faster.

I love the aspect that you need to be good at more then one/two classes, be able to play both offence and defence. Im all for 4v4 leagues (no i dont think 5v5 OvD is good), but at the same time i cant see why one has to eliminate the other, like ppl have already said. 8v8 is what iv played 90% of my active time i think.

But 4v4 is more teams, easier and faster to arrange matches, kinda like the CS scene (altho iv never played in it, i have friends that do/did). And as AfterShoooook said, easier to get a team together with your friends (i mean ppl you actually know irl, or at least have met a few times hehe)

Hmmm perhaps we should start a 4v4 OvD league in tfc now, while wating

Good luck trying to start anything new in TFC now. There just aren't enough people playing now to support new leagues.

lol both those games took their formats from the previous games they were based on, FF will probably be the same way. Regardless, I just wanted to bring up these issues to see what people thought and I'm glad some people see the validity in this type of style.

Have a world wide server whilst we're at it. As many people as you want on 1 server, man that'd be chaos.

On topic: I never really played League play, when I did it was 5v5s and if anybody actually had the chance to play with me, you know I'm Immense at singing yellow submarine whilst I repeatedly TK accidentally.
