The RJ has been part of deathmatch since the quakeworld days (over 10 years ago). It provides important strategy, defensive and offensive moves - during the heat of the action. Taking the RJ out is like cutting off a boxers leg, and then telling him to go fight. |

For such a movement game, taking our Rocket Jumping seems odd unless the rockets do a lot of damage and it would be pointless trying to rj

Back in "the day" - and this can apply to just about any game with a rocket launcher - once your health reaches 50% you need to make a split second decision to flee or fight. If there is a ledge, or a window you can jump through, always have that in mind. You have to know the map, pick your fights and when to fight them. But that decision has to be made before your health reaches 50% or 55%. When in a fight, you can RJ up to a second story walkway, firing at the enemy the whole time, and then escape. A lot of it depends on the style of map your playing. In rocket arena, a lot of the maps are not designed to utilize such moves. But the RJ can be used to lift the player off the ground to reduce the splash damage of the other players. Then there is the jump over, where you use the RJ to jump over the other player, removing you from his view and confusing him for a couple of seconds. |

kev, I'm sorry but I don't get why you don't understand. Not every major DM game 'has' to have rocket jumping to be a good game. Every game has it's own style, and Unreal never brought it up, it is well played without it. There are many alternatives to it as Tyr stated and that is all you need.
Geo, rockets do a great deal of damage, I find myself really only using the rocket launcher and flak gun (shotgun-ish weapon) Anyways UT3 is really great. Warfare mode FTW! The hover boards are great too, except for getting knocked off lol. Grappling onto other vehicles is great. Time to go buy a new PC so I can run it properly. |

Have fun rocketing off the floor, I'll be too busy jumping off walls then floating around on my hover board grappling behind vehicles. Then hijacking vehicles and driving them off ramps. While performing Hit and runs and getting UNSTOPPABLE.

Can't you grab invulnerability and quad damage and rj that way? Or does it not work in the Unreal 3 engine?

Those quakeworld days were an important part of my online gaming life. When QW died off, it was like my best friend moved away. No matter how hard you try, nothing will ever take its place. I'am still thinking of buying UT 3. |

I would consider buying it! It's just going to be a very different game than what you are used to.

UT doesn't need rj, there are too many other forms of movement in the game to even worry about RJing. Throwing everything into a game just makes it more convoluted, they picked their movement techniques, and UT IS a great! dming game. Besides UT maps are designed for UT, there's always a technique to get to every location of the maps. And when you get into a large player DM game you'll find rjing just equates into you dying far more quickly, since everyone is everywhere and deaths come pretty quick to anyone but the most skilled.
Throwing RJ's into UT would probably be equivlent to putting concs into TF2. The maps and the game aren't designed for it. |

Kev, the rocketlauncher in UT is different than the RL in the quake games.
There are modes of movement that are very close to a rocket jump (impact jumping is the closest for vertical height. I enjoy it very much, and while it is played slightly slower than the quake series, all the weapons have multiple fire modes and extended reach, which makes even a 1v1 a hectic battle. |
