Seems like most of the names work out just fine? So I'd say yeah, translate the proper class names.

Player names were like this in TFC:
- Scout: Explorador
- Sniper: Francotirador
- Soldier: Soldado
- Demoman: Experto en explosivos
- Medic: Médico
- HWGuy: Infante pesado (Heavy Infantry)
- Pyro: Incendiario
- Spy: EspÃ*a
- Engineer: Ingeniero
- SentryGun: Arma centinela

However, I was wondering if it would be better to left the names in English even if you change the language. In TF2, there's no "Explorador", there's a Scout. People in game communicate classes with their english names (i.e, "Hay una Sentry ahÃ*" = "There's a Sentry there"), so it might be wiser to leave the class names untranslated. Also, some names like "Experto en explosivos" won't fit on the class selection screen due to lenght, so we should get it abreviated into something like "Exp.Explosivos", which doesn't look very well to be honest.

Also: the HWGuy Hints still speaks about overheating. Do we translate that too? =D!

I'm willing to have a go at this for Dutch, but personally I HATE using different words then the English standard term for certain things, it's distracting and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this in the Dutch speaking region. I've never heard any real gamer appreciate a translation (I was actually allready pissed off when I noticed that I couldn't select English as installation language for HL2 since normally that's possible unless you buy some EA game.

I'll translate it to Swedish if you have the swedish letters å,ä,ö in your font.

I have played TF2 and like firefox11 said, the names are in english. Some Spanish names for the classes sound horrible, imo, so i'll stick to the original names

I have a problem with weapons, for example nailgun and super (insert name here) super i'll translate it for improved atm, but nailgun "pistola de clavos" sounds horrible xD anyone has the names of TFC?

Dispenser->Dispensador
Sentry gun -> Arma centinela, just like in TF2

So because I'm in the really-nothing-to-do period, I decided it wouldn't hurt translating FF into my language. I speak Romanian, saw a bunch of players around. There are a few special characters that need to be added, but shouldn't be a pain:

I translated it the best way I could, I mean there are certain things I simply cannot translate, but everyone knows what it is about (for instance HUD, Gameplay). Other things such as HWGuy or Demoman were translated to which I considered to be the most appropiate translation. At some point even consideret translating Napalm as Molotov since there is no such thing as Napalm around here (did incendiary grenade instead). Well personally I think it's the best version right now, waiting for other people's review, till then have my code:

Ahora mismo no recuerdo los nombres en español, pero creo que no se alejaban mucho... Quizá deberÃ*as poner "claveteadora" o "remachadora"... Y no sé si es buena idea cambiar "Super" por "mejorada", porque a lo mejor acabas quedándote sin espacio =D!

Este link puede ser de ayuda, aunque hay cosas que no quedan muy bien - la Railgun deberÃ*a ser algo como "pistola de rayos/láser", por ejemplo.


By the way, are there character limits on any of those lines? Some words in Spanish, if not most, are way longer than in English, which may cause a fitting problem. So if there's a character limit, the sooner we know it the better =o

Also, I guess it's possible to test the language swap by overwriting the original .txt with the translated one, or it will cause issues with servers with sv_pure? (Don't really want to screw up lol)

Another problem is the detpack, and fuse for x seconds, i dont know how translate it :S

I was a bit worried about languages that don't even use roman characters like Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Hindi, etc.

Scout です　か？(Basically, "Is that a Scout?" in Japanese) doesn't really sound that weird I suppose, but I'm not the one to make that decision. Until the devs discuss this, assume that we'd want to translate the names for now. (If you don't have East Asian fonts installed, you're not gonna see my crazy Japanese characters in bold, you'll just see Scout ?? ??.

I'm not 100% sure but we probably don't have those letters in the font. This is a give and take with the community here. Whoever made the font didn't have the foresight to put in some characters like, say, Cyrillic characters for Russian and Greek.

If someone does the actual translation, however, I don't see why we couldn't add them into the font (or make an extra font for that language). If we have the translation we'd be more inclined to get them added in.

I think the problem is not the font, but the game not using Unicode for some stuff. We should test this by replacing the fonts we have with known complete Unicode fonts.
