Apple's Steve Jobs Against DRM?
Steve Job's Thoughts on Music
excerpt: In 2006, under 2 billion DRM-protected songs were sold worldwide by online stores, while over 20 billion songs were sold completely DRM-free and unprotected on CDs by the music companies themselves.... So if the music companies are selling over 90 percent of their music DRM-free, what benefits do they get from selling the remaining small percentage of their music encumbered with a DRM system? There appear to be none.Quite a good article if you haven't seen it yet. Also makes you understand the position the music (and movie) industry puts Apple, Microsoft, and other computer and player companies in. |

That answer to that Jinx will be figuring out how to better restrict the use of the CD's sold by the music industry. That seems to be the trend there. Also, it seems a little hypocritical to me for Jobs to criticize the protectionist stance of the music industry. How many various software application are able to load and drive the iPOD correctly beside iTUNES? How many different online sources for buying songs does iTUNES permit? I've only had one about a year but everything I've seen and read suggests "not much". How easy is it to legally install a legitimate copy of OSX on non-MAC hardware? Apple does the same thing they accuse others of doing...they just it in their own way.

i wouldn't say it's quite in the same boat. OSX only works on certain hardware because it was only designed to work with that hardware. try complaining to maserati that their engines don't fit snugly into a fiat.

Innoc, come back after you've bothered to read the article. Jobs addresses some of what you complaining about pretty specifically. It's the music industry that dictates the terms and forces the use of DRM, not Apple or Microsoft. As for this being "old", I did a search and it hadn't been brought up here so... |

Jinx, you're already seeing one form of this restriction in the form of next generation video and what it takes to view it in full quality on a PC. Do you really think that this will not make it to computer hardware once the bugs are shaken out of the next gen of DRM protection schemes?
As far as OSX not being in the same boat we clearly do not agree. Apple does the same thing but just in a different manner. The recording industry would like nothing more than to have the level of control that Apple has presently over hardware. With control of hardware they can control where it goes. They do the same thing but in a different way and Apple is ahead of the curve compared to music and video protection. |

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/29...m_cracked.html Therefore it is a moot point. Moreover, anytime there is any kind of copy protection on a CD, people avoid them like the plague. Those CDs almost never sell well and after the rootkit debacle people will almost certainly stay away from them. |

It's not a moot point. DRM may be broken but it's not broken for the average user. And do you honestly think that the recording industry is just going to give up because the rootkit debacle was such a PR nightmare?

Blu-Ray/HD-DVD cracked too...awesome stuff. Too bad the average consumer will still be affected by it though.
