I don't think I'd ever own a gun unless war broke out in the US, but I'd definitely love to learn the basics of shooting.

If war breaks out you'd be better served learning how to hold your hands over your heads as building any type of proficiency with a firearm takes time and practice. Each weapon has it's own quirks you have to learn.
I've been shooting for almost 4 decades and even I have to spend more time with certain weapons to be comfortable. My XD(S) is a perfect example. As this will become my carry piece I need to really get more comfortable with it...plus it's my first .45 and it's a bit of a handful...
