Server Stutters

Every so often my dedicated server will just apparently freeze up. Everybody stops moving, but then it catches up and everything happens all at once. It's not a ping-based issue. I think it's tied to the amount of memory on the machine. Is there any way to confirm this? Any Linux or srcds instrumentation tools I can use to track the memory usage of srcds?

hrm, you could use a general tool like SAR to see if you're hitting hw or i/o limits causing it to hitch but thats very unlikely on modern hardware

I guess I should have mentioned that this is a cloud server running on Rackspace. So it's virtualized, which is the most likely cause of the problem. It happened more when I had less memory, and when I upgraded it mostly went away. But larger numbers of people still cause stutters. What is the usual minimum RAM required to run srcds with ~8 people?
