Contest/Project: Volleyball

ff_volleyball is a map made by Green Mushy that was hugely popular in the beta but never got publicly released. I'd like to include it as an official map, but it desperately needs a makeover first.

http://www.fortress-forever.com/publ...all0000_th.jpg

The guidelines are simple:
  • Map dimensions/size should stay the same. This means that all of the existing walls/net/floor/ceiling should be in the same place/have the same dimensions, but they do not necessarily need to be solid or opaque. Just note that the walls should be visible enough so that it doesn't impede gameplay (players need to be able to judge when the ball is going to hit a wall).
  • You can change the ball material/model if you'd like, but the size and its properties should stay the same

Entries should be in the form of screenshots initially, but final submissions will need to provide the vmf + any material/model/rad/etc files that are required for the map.

Feel free to collaborate with others as much as you'd like.

There's no real deadline, but the quicker it gets done, the better.

Download the Map Source Files

Note: The ball materials/models will need to be installed to your FortressForever folder.

This would be fun to do a make over. I have a few ideas already.

Needs more 3D skybox with beach, palm trees and hot babes cheering you on.

Can't forget the shirtless fist-pumping dudes in jean capris.

Penn could make a nice higher poly ball and nice looking net for the models, will let him know.

Rather than waste peoples time with mutlipal submissions I think people should post here who would like to do what.

Also I would like to see more fun maps being made, and get a steam update as time goes by with them.

Can you include conc_school to the release, it looks very nice and will help some new players or old ones wanting to brush up on their old tfc muscle memory :)

+1 to adding conc_school. It goes further in depth than the default training does about concs and the blackboards with instructions are a really nice touch.

Just get rid of the depressing, cloudy Half-Life 2 skybox in the map and we're all set. Can't stand the cloudy default skyboxes that are used in a lot of maps...

Anyone got anything to share? Would be cool to be able to include this in the first patch.

R00Kie 04-05-2015 09:48 PM

I just started working on something today, but nothing to show yet.

StinkyTaco 04-06-2015 12:02 AM

Will keep watching this. if anyone is working on it I can donate models, and maybe textures if needed.

R00Kie 04-07-2015 08:43 PM

I got a little added from when I started a few days ago. I'm going for a fortressy dirty beach theme. Will have waves and an In-map scoreboard (if squeek doesn't mind). Maybe fireworks or something for the winner? not sure yet.

Make the player models look like hot chicks.

Looks great R00Kie!

If you want a custom net mesh, I could model a scale one for you in blender. Or perhaps some sports arena flood lights?

Just say the work and I will give it a shot :)

R00Kie 04-08-2015 11:49 PM

I have a custom ball and net already (not in that screenshot) but thanks for the offer!

KubeDawg 04-09-2015 07:20 AM

Should make it a beach ball instead of a regular volleyball.

R00Kie 04-09-2015 07:12 PM

Yes the ball i have is a multi-color beachball.

squeek. 04-09-2015 09:09 PM

Looking good, R00Kie. Need those side walls, though, and the vertical height of the walls is also important. The ball can tend to get up pretty high.

Unless those structures are just going to be the background and the walls are going to be semi-transparent?

R00Kie 04-09-2015 09:49 PM

I was planning on adding more rocks/trees to the top and other stuff to fill in the gaps. Here's a more updated screenshot.

Just be aware that wall shots are pretty much the standard. Direct hits are extremely risky and are best avoided (if you hit it slightly wrong, it can send it straight down).

So, I can't overstate how important clearly defined walls are. I know that makes interesting aesthetics difficult, though.

R00Kie 04-09-2015 09:57 PM

Yes, i'm aware of that, i was planning on adding roping or something around the sides for a visual wall. I haven't got that far yet but ill figure something out.
