Conficker Worm - Cyberattack on April 1st?

It's lurking in millions of PCs around the world. It's incredibly sophisticated and resilient, with built-in p2p and digital code-signing technology. It revels in killing security software. On April 1, the Conficker worm will activate.
Discuss?

I got the same message.
As long as you PATCH WINDOWS (yes, even you mr. "I'll stick with XP SP1 because SP2 breaks shit" or mr. "SP3 uses more resources then SP2!") (Both are utter BS btw...) and has your antivirus up, you should be fine. I'm note sure how nasty Conficker is when it comes to port scanning, but you might want to lock down any ports on your router that you're not using.

Most people around here an generally smart with computers. But things like open wifi would be a BAD idea. I'll do some research later on what people are expecting...

SP3 does use more resources. My video card ran FF and video decently with SP2. Now on SP3 it runs like shit and I have to actually go out and buy a new card.

But I'm a comp fixer dude, so I know firsthand how stupid it would be not to update. Blarg.

Anyway, I bet Conficker is going to do something like... "dudez, your computer is infected. You need to improve your security man. April Fool's!"

There is a list of patches for various versions of Windows here.

Go purchase a new computer. And no, you are not allowed a new Brag-About-Your-Computer Post.

I'm running XP SP3 on a 1.2GHz P3 with 512 ram. I saw NO hit when i went from SP2 to SP3.

Just stay updated but if you think you're infected, try going to www.mcafee.com

If your browser blocks it, you're probably infected with something.. if not then you're good to go.

This worm originally came out in November of last year iirc and has gone through several revisions since then.

Apparently the latest revision is pretty good and whoever wrote it is extremely careful and smart about remaining anonymous.. To the point that Microsoft has supposedly put a $250,000 bounty on their head.

There's some speculation that the virus originated in Eastern Europe but nothing solid so far.

I remember fighting both the code red virus and the infamous "I love you" virus at my company. those were some fun times trying to keep up with that stuff!

I have a moderate adware infection and I can still go to McAffee. Fail.

Not exactly fail. This particular worm blocks popular antivirus sites which is what I was referring to. Sorry to hear you are infected though.

ditto

Heavy traffic still can effect your linux system.
If everyone is getting attacked, expect a network slowdown (read: DDOS)

-=bingo-bango=- 03-30-2009 01:46 AM

a network slowdown isnt something im going to be worried about

zSilver_Fox 03-30-2009 01:49 AM

Or is it?

Icculus: I still love you, don't worry.

Icculus 03-30-2009 12:59 PM
