What causes that purple and black checkerboard?

I don't have any unknown textures.

Missing or corrupt files, you can try restarting the game.

every time you run your map for the first time after you compile it, type this in the console:

buildcubemaps


It'll render images for all your cubemaps and apply them to all the checkerboardy surfaces.

I had this problem after changing resolutions in game, even after building cubemaps. I also had the same problem when changing my Aliasing. The problem wasn't resolved on it's own until I restarted steam, however you could always type "mat_fastspecular 0" in the console and it gets rid of it nice and quickly, however that also takes away the "specularity" of reflective surfaces, including the first-person weapons etc. Either way, it's not a fatal thing, quick fix. It doesn't mean everyone is going to have the same issue when they download your map...

remember to make sure sv_cheats is 1, and reload the map after building cubemaps to see the newly rendered surfaces, or it wont look any different!

Are you sure? I haven't had to do that, but then again this was before the update; have things changed for the worse?

well, you definately have to reload the map to load the new cubemaps. The first time you reload it after building, you notice a pause just as you spawn (length depending on how many cubemaps youve built), which are the new cubemaps loading/saving to the bsp. In my console it tells me it wont load new cubemaps unless sv_cheats is on. Not sure if this was the same before the update, only just started using them myself.

Cause this happens when the game is minimized sometimes. when you maxamize it many lighting areas are checkerboxed (like the reflections on water/weapons/people.
