What To Buy

Purchasing a game is no longer necessary

The only requirement is Source SDK Base 2006, which is 100% free and has no requirements other than a Steam account. It is found in the Tools section of the Library tab.

Mind that the free HL2DM which owners of ATI cards get doesn't contain the Source SDK, however if you buy it via Steam, it's included.

While these games come with the Source SDK, you only need to install Source SDK Base. Difference:

Source SDK is for creating maps, models, mods etc,
Source SDK Base is needed to play mods.

Mooga 09-16-2007 02:25 AM

Exactly.
I basically took that list and broke it down it to the best options, since not every game is sold as a single.

Also, FF will NOT run with just the SDK installed, the Base MUST be installed to run.

BUMP... since I had to mention this in another thread or two already :)

I bought the HL2+CS pack when it came out and it's one of my best buys ever because you get so much for your cash. The lite packages seems way too lite imo. And the big packages are a waste of money.

Why did you not include the Source Multiplayer Pack (did they stop offering it?) It comes with hl2dm, css, dods and of course sdk base for only 30 bucks american. Best deal in my opinion.

edit: I just checked and they still offer it. 3 popular online games and the ability to play every mod for free, it's a great offer in my opinion.

I didn't see it earlier. Thanks :)
And it's been added.

Hey. Since you know Alien Swarm came out completely free and with Source SDK, does it mean that you can install Fortress Forever (yet better - any Source mod) without paying for other Source games to acquire SDK base?
Just curious and lazy to test :P

Iggy 08-16-2010 09:49 PM

I'm putting this as a sticky, since it's some good information that people new to the mod may be in need of.

That's false. Alien Swarm comes with the Alien Swarm SDK. It doesn't provide you with any of the content needed to play FF.

Damn kids with their graphics. Can't enjoy a game unless it's got brown and bloom.

You need Source SDK Base to play mods, not just the Source SDK (see second post in the thread). I edited the OP to reflect that.

Pulsar 03-28-2012 01:20 AM

now you can play fortress forever free
just get tf2 free

Ricey 03-28-2012 07:59 PM

You don't need to download TF2 to play FF, you just need to download Source 2006 Base in Tools, that is all you need.

Lynus 04-04-2012 01:55 AM

Note: if you dont have a game on your steam account besides FF and Source SDK Base 2006, you will not be able to add anyone to your friends list. Only if they add you first. Lol

Please note that I'm a Nirvana user and yet I got HL2:DM for free, steam-legit.
