ReflexFPS

New arena FPS, looks like Q3 CPMA. Dedicated servers, cosmetic customization, steam workshop.

Reflex Fortress anyone?

Looks pretty good, too bad it will die in the water like the 100 other "arena resurection" games. Which is exactly what I told neon when he showed it to me. I don't really see this type of gameplay coming back just yet. I could be wrong, but if it does come back the scene is going to be so oversaturated.

Every body and their brother thinks they have the unique twist to put on arena gaming to "save" it. And thanks to this most lucrative time in indie gaming, they have the shot to garner attention and see development through to a final product, where it will slow fizzle out from an already lack luster release.

I will say though this is the best looking one I've seen yet, as it seems closest to cpma. Stake jump is also the most unique take on wall jumping without just being a gay ass ninja wall jump.

And I'm not going to lie, there's a handful of this type of game being made with a decent amount of hype around them. But I honestly thing fair portion of that hype comes form video game "hipsters" who just want to talk about "old school" gaming, and not actually devote any time to playing it or bringing it back. You get a handful of newer players like that in FF all the time, who just play it so they can say they've played it. And I've known a few people who will jump to a new gldsrc game every other week before going back to playing tf2 or csgo.

Game looks cool and I'll play it. No expectations though.

Makes me want to go play some QL, but in recent years whenever I do I end up getting bored quickly and not touching it for another year or so.

These days for me personally I think the key lies in non-dm gamemodes. On that subject, why do arena shooters seem to love flag return on touch for CTF? The resulting lack of progression and reduction of depth in the gameplay kills it for me.

Excellent post, caesium, I agree that there should be focus on non-DM gameplay and non-instant return CTF.

As for reflex, an in-game map editor sounds amazing, Hammer is so unwieldy.

Anytone else notice the gothic themed concept is based on a CPMA map?

I like the movement techniques, and I'm getting a big Warsow vibe.

But FDA's point may still stand: how many people will stick with it?

Nevermind, funding didn't make it.

Even though the kickstarter failed, they are still going to do early access on steam.

I talked to the developers a bit on #reflex on quakenet, they told me that there won't be mod support for gamemodes like how defrag, CPMA, Quake 3 Fortress etc are for quake 3, which is kind of disappointing, because I was planning on trying something like Reflex Fortress.

I know for sure they are going to have alot of gamemodes such as CTF, and its even possible for it to be non touch return.

I also had an idea when making maps, you could make all players spawn in a small "lobby" room and they can choose a class via teleporters, which would give them the appropriate weapons and spawn them in their resupply room. Kind of a map made "class system".

Silly Goose, reading comprehension is for kids!

Glad to hear it's still happening in some way or another. Not happy to hear about no mod support. Regardless, I'll play this.

The game looks very interesting and pretty good.

I think with all of these arena shooters and good games coming out at the same time, especially the big one being a new Unreal Tournament that looks like it's not going to be doody, I think games that actually take some goddamn skill to play can finally make a comeback.
