View Full Version : Can we change text color?

I never liked the default orange text color and when I played TFC I used the con_color variable to change it to white, but that doesn't seem to work in source anymore. Is there a way to change the text in-game? (I checked the FF variables page but I didn't see anything)

I might be completely wrong, but I think you may just be leading me on a bit..
Hmm but anyways.. 3 C's in a hint.. Perhaps it has something to do with the Calgon Carbon Corporation who's stock is at $15.01 and just dropped $0.16.. My friends at Urbandictionary.com have pointed out that yy could mean "you must be proud of yourself".. IFF- "if and only if"..
So using perfectly sound logic, the hint your trying to give me is that FF is being purchased by a depreciating company and to invest..
I do remember you having prophet like powers in posts past..

It's already been mentioned somewhere on here that colours are on the horizon, using quake style coding
for example:
0 = black
1 = white
2 = red
3 = orange
etc
^ is the tag, so ^1=^3BC^1=^0Mirage would look like =BC=Mirage

Now that you mention that I recall reading that, but it doesn't necessarily mean you can change the default colors so that all in-game chat text is white on your screen. Guess I'll have to wait and see =/

Sounds good, although people using those "MEDIC|H100|A100|FLAG ROOM" binds in pubs would get annoying with bright pink/yellow colors. :p

Thanks to the info in DrEvil's Changelog Post (http://www.fortress-forever.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12260), I can state what my clue means.

Yes you can change colors in Fortress Forever.

YYCCCIFF. :lol:

I just read the changelog and it doesn't appear as though we will be able to set the text color like I hoped. It looks like we will have the option to set what color we send text with, but there isn't an option to change the default color or even to change all text color (client side) to a color of your choice.

I don't really want to be seeing rainbow text all the time and I know that is what some people will be doing with binds: Like instead of using it sensibly they will have single words with rainbow colors; but there is nothing to be done about that I guess (Edit: just read in the change log that there will be a cvar to disable it :)). But what I was asking about is the option that is in TFC: con_color r g b on the HL1 engine you use it to change the default color of all in-game text to appear with the color of your choice, so instead of having a default orange chat text I had a default white chat text.

I'm still hoping that an option of this sort will be implemented, unless I'm misunderstanding the use of color in the patch and it already is set to be implemented.

EDIT: I don't mean to sound like I am dumping on the new color feature, I think it is cool and could be very useful if used sensibly.

EDIT: I don't mean to sound like I am dumping on the new color feature, I think it is cool and could be very useful if used sensibly. But you and I know it won't. It will only encourage people to spam pretty pointless unnecessary annoying distracting mess.

It's like colored nicknames in WL messenger abused.

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of clan play or organized servers like Odin's Graveyard where offense and defense can color code their common binds so if I am on defense and I hit a bind to say "where is the flag" I don't get information about the enemy flag and I don't respond to somebody on offense by telling them where our team's flag is.

EDIT: On second thought it probably will only be useful in clan matches because it requires uniformity in the use of colors. I pretty much expect pubs to be full of random messages in rainbow colors that are impossible to read, which is why I will make use of the cvar that Dr.Evil mentioned in the changelog (the one to turn off the colorization)

If he can not squeeze in the colors into the patch for whatever reason, maybe there can be a simple fix?

Change your chat icons to:

bind _ "messagemode ^5" or something so it automatically puts it in the color of your choice?

Is messagemode going to be included now :O?

Hmm, there still seems to be some confusion about what I was/am talking about.

I am not worried about what color the text is that I send to the rest of the players.

What I am asking (and probably should put it as a feature request at this point) is if the devs can add in a cvar where I can select a color for all chat text that appears on my screen. I know that they had the foresight to put in a cvar to disable the color codes which is nice, but what I would absolutely love is a cvar like con_color from TFC where I set a color and all text that I see is that color. So like before this first patch all text was orange by default, what I would like to see is an option to make all text white (or w/e color) by default.

That's the best description I can give. If there is still confusion then all I can suggest is launch TFC, go into console and type con_color 0 0 0 and then look at the in-game chat. You should notice that it is all white.

Also, I realize this is far from a priority so early on and I'm not too worried about it, but I really can't stand the default orange text and
its really hard for me to read it.

I too change the text I see to white (in TFC).

cl_chat_color 0 (from http://www.fortress-forever.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12260)

It looks like colors will be able to be disabled, so I'd assume it wouldn't be tough to implement changing all incoming text to a certain color. Just make sure DrEvil hears the suggestion.
